Alexander Zverev is the third seed in this year’s Cincinnati Open. Zverev has featured in eight previous main draws in this ATP 1000 and won it once in 2021, dropping just one set during the week. Zverev has since made it to the semifinal stage in each of his last two trips to Cincinnati and lost an epic to Jannik Sinner last year. The German has won one title this season, and that came in Munich on clay.

Zverev is coming off a semifinal run in Canada, where he lost to Karen Khachanov in three sets at the Toronto Masters. Basavareddy was expected to face Gael Monfils in his opening match in Cincinnati, but the French veteran pulled out of the tournament. The 20-year-old, therefore, was scheduled to face lucky loser Aleksandar Vukic. Basavareddy won that encounter in two tight sets. He failed to serve out the first set at 5-4 up, but won it in the tiebreak. Basavareddy recovered from an early break in the second set, breaking Vukic’s serve to complete a 7-6, 7-5 victory in an hour and 40 minutes.

Zverev should ease into the third round here. He’s had his meltdowns this season and threw away some matches from winning leads, but he doesn’t always mess up in early rounds. Basavareddy is a great talent who is still cutting his teeth on the ATP Tour, and he’s a solid counterpuncher on hard courts, but hasn’t faced a player of Zverev’s caliber and power for some time as he continues to develop his game on the Challenger. The American will still show flashes of his talent, but I’m not overthinking, as I expect Zverev to be in total command.
