Sixth seed Jil Teichmann reached her first WTA final since 2021 at this week’s Iasi Open in Romania. The Swiss lefty started the tournament by beating Miriam Bulgharu in three sets. In the second round, Teichmann defeated Maja Chwalinska 7-6, 6-2 before knocking out countrywoman Simona Waltert in the quarterfinals 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 in two hours and 51 minutes. 

Teichmann faced one of Romania’s top players in the semis and she proved too strong for Sorana Cirstea, extending her perfect record in the head-to-head. Teichmann won 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 35 minutes. She landed 65% of first serves in play and won 60% of first serve points (27/45). Teichmann won 54% of second serve points (13/24) and saved four of six break points.
Teichmann won her two WTA finals before this in 2019 on clay in Prague and Palermo. She lost her next two finals on hard courts in Lexington to Jennifer Brady and Cincinnati to Ash Barty. She has since contested four finals on the ITF and 125K level, winning three of those. Teichmann will return to the Top 100 having recently left it briefly.,

It was only fitting that a Romanian would make the final in Iasi. And it will be Irina-Camelia Begu. The 34-year-old veteran reached her second final in this tournament. She lost the 2023 final when the event was yet to be upgraded to Tour-level status. That year, she defeated Teichmann in the quarterfinals. Begu will contest her 10th career final on the WTA Tour. She has a 5-4 record in finals. Only one of those titles was on clay, and it was on home soil in Bucharest. Her last title win at any level was in Palermo three years ago when she beat Lucia Bronzetti. 

This has been a poor season for Begu, who has just nine wins before this week. But she’s utilized her experience and clay-court nous to beat some inexperienced names and make the final. In the first round, Begu won 6-1, 6-2 against Nao Hibino. She faced serious competition from Jimenez Kasintseva but won that second-round match in three sets in over two hours. She then needed another three-setter to overcome Anna Siskova to set up an all-Romanian semifinal against Jaqueline Cristian. Begu defeated her compatriot 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and nine minutes to book her spot in the final.

I do understand why the books have Begu as odds-on for the title. She’s the home player and will naturally get the crowd behind him for this match. She’s also played a final in this tournament before and has a winning record against Teichmann. But the Swiss has looked sharper for most of this year, ensuring she reclaimed her top 100 spot after working her way from the lower rungs of the professional tournaments. Form over the longer stretch favors Teichmann.
