Rutgers Scarlet Knights Betting Preview

It’s been a mixed bag in the record column for Rutgers so far this year, and they’ve been unable to stay above the .500 mark. The Knights came out of the gate with a solid 5-1 stretch featuring only a loss to Kennesaw State. From there it was losses to Alabama, Texas A&M, and Ohio State ahead of a 3-1 stretch with wins over Penn State, Seton Hall, and Columbia. Rutgers would go just 2-5 over the next seven outings with losses to Indiana, Wisconsin, Purdue, Penn State, and Michigan State. Since then it’s been a 2-3 run with wins over Northwestern and Illinois. The losses otherwise have come versus Michigan, Maryland, and Iowa. That gives the Knights a 12-13 overall run so far through the first 25 games of the year.

In their latest outing on Wednesday versus Iowa, the Knights opened up on a 42-33 advantage. Rutgers finished off the game with a 51-31 disadvantage though, leaving them with an 84-73 defeat in the end. Leading the team in scoring were Ace Bailey (five rebounds; four assists) and Jeremiah Williams (six rebounds; four assists), each with 13 points. Tops off the bench was Tyson Acuff with 12 points and two rebounds in 16 minutes on the floor.

Oregon Ducks Betting Preview

Over on the Oregon side, they had a rough losing streak going recently but aside from that they’ve done well overall. The Ducks hit a nine-game run of Ws out of the gate before taking their first loss to UCLA on December 8. After that came a 6-1 stretch with a lone loss to Illinois amid wins over Stephen F. Austin, Stanford, Weber State, Maryland, Ohio State, and Penn State. Since then Oregon has gone just 2-6 with wins over only Washington and Northwestern. The losses otherwise have come courtesy of Purdue, Minnesota, UCLA, Nebraska, Michigan and Michigan State. In total that gives the Ducks a 17-8 overall run through 25 games so far.

In the Northwestern matchup on Tuesday, the Ducks jumped out to a comfortable 39-25 halftime edge. Oregon was outscored 50-42 the rest of the way but held on for the win in the end 81-75. Jackson Shelstad led the team with 26 points, four assists, one rebound, and one steal. Keeshawn Barthelemy added 19 points with four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Nate Bittle also finished in double-figures with 14 points, seven boards, and one assist.

Why the Oregon Ducks will win

  • Rutgers has lost each of its last nine Sunday games against the Big Ten Conference.
  • Oregon has won 29 of its last 34 games at Matthew Knight Arena against non-AP-ranked opponents.
  • Oregon has won the first half in 20 of its last 26 day games at Matthew Knight Arena against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Why the Rutgers Scarlet Knights will win

  • Oregon has lost each of its last four day games against the Big Ten Conference.

Rutgers vs Oregon Prediction

I’ll lean toward Oregon. The Ducks are coming off a pretty good win over a middling Northwestern team—despite giving up 51.7 percent shooting from the field. Oregon shot well themselves (47.1 percent) and hit 25-of-28 from the line (89.3 percent) alongside a 33-27 rebounding edge. The Ducks also scored 18 points off 11 Wildcats turnovers. It was a much-needed victory following five straight losses (four of them on the road) with 77 or more points surrendered in each.

As for Rutgers, they’ve scored pretty well over the last couple of games with a combined 154 points. The thing is, the Knights have given up 174 points on the other side in a pair of losses. Oregon should have plenty of opportunities to get ahead quickly in this one, and I think they’ll stay there.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Oregon Ducks -6
