Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders Betting Preview

The Islanders have had a couple of rough runs so far this year, but on the whole, they’re not doing too badly record-wise, all things considered. Texas A&M-CC opened on a 1-3 run with losses to Purdue, New Mexico, and New Mexico State, then hit a 6-3 stretch that featured wins over Tennessee Martin, Le Moyne, Texas Lutheran, Prairie View, Stephen F. Austin, and Southwestern Adventist. A win streak over Schreiner, SE Louisiana, New Orleans, UTRGV, Northwestern State, and Incarnate Word came next, then a 1-2 stretch. The lone win in that trio came over Nicholls State. Otherwise, it was a pair of losses to Houston Christian and McNeese State, giving Texas A&M-CC a 14-8 overall run through the first 22 games of the season. 

In the McNeese matchup on Monday, the Islanders were ahead by two points by halftime. Texas A&M-CC was outscored 39-36 the rest of the way though, resulting in a tough home loss 74-73. Garry Clark posted 22 points with 14 rebounds for a double-double, and Jordan Roberts had 22 bench points with two boards and two assists. Owen Dease doubled up as well on 14 points and 10 rebounds in the defeat. 

UTRGV Vaqueros Betting Preview

Over on the Texas Rio Grande Valley side, they got off to a pretty solid start over their first 14 games but they’ve had some issues in the win column since then. UTRGV went 10-4 in that opening stretch, taking out Champion Christian, Charleston Southern, Tennessee Tech, Le Moyne, Stephen F. Austin, Northern New Mexico, Southern Utah, College of Biblical Studies, Dallas Christian, and New Orleans in that time. The Vaqueros have since gone just 2-5 in their last seven. The losses in that time have come versus SE Louisiana, Texas A&M-CC, Houston Christian, McNeese, and Nicholls for a 12-9 overall run through the first 21 outings this year. 

Matched up against Nicholls in their Monday game, the Vaqueros came out of the locker room with a 34-30 edge. UTRGV got outscored 52-41 in the second half, however, resulting in an 82-75 loss in the end. Leading the way was DK Thorn with 23 points, five boards, and four assists. Kwo Agwa doubled up with 14 points and 12 rebounds in the defeat.

Texas A&M-CC vs UTRGV Prediction 

I’ll lean toward the Islanders. You could make a case either way here though, as both teams could use a victory. Texas A&M-CC shot just 41.7 percent from the field and 65.2 percent (15-of-23) from the line during their tight loss to McNeese this week. The Islanders gave up 48.2 percent shooting on the other side and coughed away 10 turnovers for 15 Cowboys points. Texas A&M-CC has lost two of their last three games, but they’re still scoring well overall. 

The last time these teams met up back on January 11, the Islanders secured a 79-74 win at home. Texas A&M-CC is really going to have to push the issue on offense during this road rematch (and minimize mistakes) but I think they can pull it off if all goes well.
