Southern Utah Thunderbirds Betting Preview

Southern Utah got off to a very nice start through 10 games this year, but since early December they’ve got just one win in the books. The Thunderbirds took out Western New Mexico, Florida International, Bethesda University, Omaha, San Diego, Idaho, Cal State Bakersfield, and Park University Gilbert during an 8-2 opening run. The only win since then came versus Texas Arlington on January 11. Otherwise, it’s been losses to Arizona, New Mexico State, UTRGV, Northern Arizona, Grand Canyon, Tarleton State, Seattle U, Grand Canyon again, Cal Baptist, and Texas Arlington. The result so far has been a 9-12 overall record through 21 games. 

In the Texas Arlington road rematch on Thursday, the Thunderbirds posted a 36-25 deficit in the first half. Southern Utah got better from there on a 43-34 run but still lost 70-68 in the end. Jamir Simpson was the team’s leading scorer on 20 points. Jeffrey Langston was the only other double-digit scorer with 16 points, but Brock Felder added 13 rebounds with six points. 

Tarleton State Texans Betting Preview

Over on the Tarleton State side, they limped to a pretty ugly record through their first 13 games but things have been going better recently. The Texans posted a 3-10 mark in those opening games, falling to SMU, Sam Houston, Florida State, Baylor, Michigan, Iona, Indiana State, UCF, UTEP and Oklahoma State. A 5-1 run came next with a loss to Utah Tech amid wins over Howard Payne, Florida A&M, Texas Arlington, Southern Utah, and Cal Baptist. Following two more losses to Grand Canyon and Abilene Christian, the Texans managed a win over Utah Tech to give them a 9-13 overall run through 22 games so far this season. 

Matched up against Utah Tech in their Thursday outing, Tarleton State held a three-point edge after one half 24-21. The Texans kept it rolling from there on a 37-33 stretch and took the eventual victory 61-54. Bubu Benjamin led the team with 14 points with three boards, three steals, and two assists. Dantwan Grimes came off the bench for 13 points and two assists in 36 minutes, while both Chris Mpaka (10 rebounds) and Izzy Miles added 10 points each. 

Why the Tarleton State Texans will win

Southern Utah vs Tarleton State Prediction 

I’ll stick with the Texans. There’s not much intrigue involved in this one if you’re not a fan of either team, though. Tarleton State is coming off an offensively limp and sloppy win over Utah Tech, shooting just 39.1 percent from the field with 16 turnovers for 15 Trailblazers points. The Texans benefitted from Utah Tech’s 18 turnovers with 20 points on the other side, though. Tarleton State has been below 68 points in five straight games now, so they’re not exactly blowing up the scoreboards these days. 

The last time these teams met up back on January 9, the Texans secured a 74-66 road victory. That one was a sloppy game as well, with Tarleton State accounting for 15 of the 31 total turnovers. The Texans shot much better there, however (47.3 percent) and got to the line 26 times. If they can clean up the mistakes in this home rematch, Tarleton State should be fine.
