Missouri State didn’t start out the year too badly, but since late December it’s been nothing but losses in the record column. The Bears took out Missouri Southern State, Tulsa, Texas Arlington, and High Point (with a loss to Butler) in their first five games, then hit a 1-4 stretch. Over on the Indiana State side, they were on a great run early in the season. Since late December however, the Sycamores have just one win in the books. Indiana State beat Eureka, Ball State, Chicago State, Iona, Tarleton State, Missouri State, Murray State, and the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy during an 8-4 opening run. The losses were versus FAU, SIU Edwardsville, Southern Indiana, and Arkansas State. Since then it’s been a 1-8 run for the Sycamores. The win was over Evansville. Otherwise, it was losses to Ohio State, Bradley, Valparaiso, Belmont, Bradley again, Drake, Illinois State, and Northern Iowa in that time, giving Indiana State a 9-12 overall record through 21 games so far this season.

Matched up against Northern Iowa over the weekend, the Sycamores held a 38-26 deficit by the break. Indiana State was outpaced 36-30 in the second half and never got closer during a 74-56 loss. Tops in scoring was Marcus Hardin with 16 points and eight rebounds. Aaron Gray added 11 points with four rebounds and two assists, while Jaden Daughtry led the bench contributors with 10 points with two rebounds and one steal in 16 minutes.

I’ll stay with Indiana State. There’s not a lot to get excited about here if you’re not a fan of either team, though. The Sycamores shot pretty miserably in their latest loss to Northern Iowa, hitting just 34.5 percent from the field with 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the line alongside a 40-31 rebounding deficit. The 14 turnovers for 14 Panthers points didn’t help either. Indiana State has scored fewer than 57 points in two of their last three games, and they’ve given up 71 or more points in six straight (all losses).

As for Missouri State, they haven’t scored well lately either, finishing below 69 points in six of the last seven (a winless run). Indiana State should have the advantage in a home matchup on Wednesday and will be in line for a much-needed victory if all goes well.
