VCU Rams Betting Preview

The Rams have had a couple of quick spurts of unsteady play this year, but overall they’ve been a highly consistent team. VCU opened with wins over Bellarmine, Boston College, Merrimack, and Loyola Maryland, then took consecutive losses (their only consecutive losses so far) versus Seton Hall and Nevada. After wins over Miami, Elizabeth City State, Georgia Southern, Penn, and Colorado State, the Rams fell to New Mexico and St. Bonaventure (with a win over William & Mary) in the next trio. Since then it’s been all wins. VCU has dispatched Loyola Chicago, Fordham, Saint Louis, Saint Joseph’s, Rhode Island, and St. Bonaventure in succession for a 16-4 overall record this year.

In the rematch Friday versus St. Bonaventure, VCU held a 33-25 deficit by the break and things were looking grim. The Rams surged on a 50-28 run from there, however, eventually powering out the win 75-61. Leading the team in the comeback was Joe Bamisile with 18 points, six boards, and six assists. Phillip Russell added 16 points with two steals and two assists, while Max Shulga put up 13 points with five assists, four steals, and two rebounds.

Saint Louis Billikens Betting Preview

Over on the Saint Louis side, they’ve been a pretty consistent team themselves this year. The Billikens had a rough run in December but other than that they’re doing well. St. Louis opened on a 5-2 stretch with wins over Avila, Loyola Marymount, Quinnipiac, UMass Lowell, and Jackson State. A 1-4 run came next with a lone win versus Chicago State among losses to San Francisco, Illinois State, Wofford, and Grand Canyon. Since then it’s been a 6-2 stretch with losses to VCU and George Washington among wins over William Woods, Fordham, Saint Joseph’s, St. Bonaventure, Richmond, and La Salle otherwise for a 12-8 overall record.

Matched up against George Washington in their last outing, the Billikens hit a rough first half on a 36-22 deficit. Saint Louis got better from there on a 39-31 run but eventually took the loss 67-61 in the end. Robbie Avila put up 13 points with three steals, four assists, and four rebounds to lead the team. Gibson Jimerson added 12 points with seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while Amari McCottry led the bench players with six points.

Why the Saint Louis Billikens will win

  • Saint Louis has won 10 of its last 11 games at Chaifetz Arena.

Why the VCU Rams will win

  • VCU has won each of its last six games.
  • Saint Louis has lost each of its last seven Tuesday night games against the Atlantic 10 Conference.

VCU vs St. Louis Prediction

I’m going to stay with the Rams. VCU is looking good these days and coming off a nice win over St. Bonaventure—despite a slow start. The Rams shot 44.8 percent from the field in that one and scored 17 points off 16 Bonnies turnovers. VCU is sitting on a nice six-game win streak right now, with 73 or more points in each of those games.

The last time these teams saw each other wasn’t that long ago: January 14 in a 78-62 Rams win at home. VCU didn’t shoot all that well (41.7 percent) in that one, but won the rebounding battle 38-26 and scored 27 points on 19 Billikens turnovers. The Rams can’t rely on St. Louis to make mistakes in this rematch, so they’ve got to get that shooting percentage up. If that goes well (and the rebounding stays strong) VCU should be fine.

Andrew Jett's Pick: VCU Rams -4.5
