Rafael Jodar beat Joao Fonseca in the battle of the Next Gen stars in the third round of the Madrid Open. In the late-night thriller, home favorite Jodar knocked out Brazilian prodigy Fonseca in an entertaining match. Jodar prevailed 7-6, 4-6, 6-1 in two hours and 9 minutes. This was his 11th win from his last 12 matches on clay.In the victory, Jodar hit 29 winners and 29 unforced errors. That included 4 aces and 1 double fault. Jodar landed 59% of first serves in play and won 81% of first serve points (46/57). Jodar won 46% of second serve points (18/39) and saved five of seven break points on serve in the match. Before this round, Jodar beat Jesper De Jong in three sets and earned his first Top 10 win by defeating Alex de Minaur.
Vit Kopriva entered the 2026 Madrid Open ranked 66th in the ATP rankings and had never won a main draw match in the tournament. But he’s finally picked up a win in this tournament when he took down Zhizhen Zhang 6-2, 6-0. He backed up that win by upstaging Andrey Rublev 6-3, 6-4 in the second round.
In the third round, Kopriva earned a retirement win over Arthur Rinderknech. The match was tied at one set all when Rinderknech retired due to a calf injury. The victory propels Kopriva into the last 16 and is now eyeing back-to-back quarterfinals at the tour level. He made the last eight of the Munich Open almost two weeks ago, where he lost to Flavio Cobolli.
