Number 21 seed Victoria Mboko will face World No. 59 Anastasia Potapova in the second round of the 2025 China Open in Beijing. The match is scheduled for Saturday, September 27. Here’s our Victoria Mboko vs Anastasia Potapova prediction. This preview will also include a Victoria Mboko vs Anastasia Potapova pick.

Victoria Mboko vs Anastasia Potapova Preview

Victoria Mboko is the 21st seed in Beijing, where she is making her debut appearance at the China Open. The 19-year-old Canadian has enjoyed a fantastic breakout season on the WTA Tour, where she achieved a number of firsts, made more famous by her sensational title win at her home tournament in Montreal last month.

Mboko defeated a quartet of Grand Slam champions at the WTA 1000 in Montreal and became Canada’s top-ranked woman after that tournament. She swiftly withdrew from Cincinnati and would go straight to New York to compete for the US Open. But Mboko stumbled at the first hurdle in the final Grand Slam of the season, losing to the veteran Barbora Krejcikova. Mboko hasn’t played since the end of August.

Anastasia Potapova is unseeded and began her tournament in Beijing with a straight-sets win over Katerina Siniakova. Potapova led 5-0 in the first set, but gave away three games and needed two attempts to serve for the set, which she won 6-3.

In the second set, Siniakova and Potapova exchanged breaks twice, but when the Czech was broken for a third time to trail 3-4, she could not get near Potapova’s serve in the next two games and the Russian held for a 6-3, 6-4 victory in 82 minutes. Potapova hit one ace and three double faults in the match. She won 79% of first serve points (23/29) and saved one of four break points.

Victoria Mboko vs Anastasia Potapova Head-To-Head

Mboko and Potapova met at the Citi Open in late July. The Canadian won in straight sets.

Victoria Mboko vs Anastasia Potapova Prediction
Mboko overpowered Potapova when they played in Washington. At the time, Potapova was just returning from an injury layoff. Now the roles are reversed, as Mboko takes to the court after an extended period of rest following her breakthrough summer in North America. I’m leaning towards Potapova here, who I think will be more acclimatized with the courts after playing one match and looking sharper.

Nur Said's Pick: Potapova in three sets
