Matteo Arnaldi is set for his first appearance at the Citi Open. He is ranked 44th in the ATP rankings, down by 14 spots from his career-high ranking. Arnaldi has a modest 8-7 record on hard courts this season, having competed in seven tournaments. He lost in the first round in at least two of those tournaments, to Lorenzo Musetti at the Australian Open and Alexander Zverev in Acapulco. His best result on a hard court was in Delray when he made the semis and lost to Davidovich Fokina. He also made the third round in Indian Wells. One of those was the ATP 500 in Rotterdam, where Altmaier beat French rising star Arthur Fils. He was also a quarterfinalist at the Cap Cana Challenger, where he beat Dusan Lajovic and David Goffin. Since reaching the fourth round of Roland Garros, Altmaier has lost five of his last seven matches, including in his first warm-up event before the US Open at the ATP 250 in Los Cabos, Mexico.
