Jannik Sinner vs Benjamin Bonzi Preview
Jannik Sinner is the top seed at the Madrid Open. He’s back to World No. 1 in the ATP rankings. He won his biggest clay-court title at the Monte Carlo Masters by beating his chief rival, Carlos Alcaraz. That match decided the World No. 1 ranking heading into the final phase of the clay court swing. And with Alcaraz pulling out of Madrid due to injury, Sinner has a clear path to extend his lead at the top and potentially pick up his fourth straight title.Since losing to Jakub Mensik in the Doha quarterfinals, Sinner has been near untouchable. He won the Sunshine Double without losing a single set, the first time it has happened in history. Then he joined Novak Djokovic as the only two men to follow up the Indian Wells-Miami double with a Monte Carlo title. Although he lost his magnificent record of a 37-set streak at the Principality, Sinner eventually lifted the trophy. This will be his fourth appearance in Madrid. He was a quarterfinalist in 2024.
Benjamin Bonzi won his opening match at the 2026 Madrid Open. Bonzi entered this tournament as a qualifier and beat countryman Titouan Droguet in the main draw in a match lasting two hours and 35 minutes. He prevailed 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 for just his second tour level win of the season.
In the victory, Bonzi hit 2 aces and 2 double faults. Bonzi landed 63% of first serves in play and won 84% of first serve points (53/63). He won 62% of second serve points (23/37) and saved one break point in the match. Overall, Bonzi hit 35 winners and 36 unforced errors. He is looking to reach the third round of the Madrid Open for the second year in a row.
