Tien has since elevated his level to be part of the Top 100. He upset Daniil Medvedev in this year’s Australian Open, in a real breakthrough moment on the main tour. Tien is currently 15-15 for the season after an underwhelming clay swing. Before this month, he had never played a grass court match on the pro tour. This is more of a 50/50 matchup and the bookies are instilling Tien as the pre-match favorite, but only just. And you’d have to agree with that. I think from the little we’ve seen from Engel, he loves pace and is not fazed by it, which explains why some of his recent results have been against power hitters. But Tien offers something different. He’s one of the smartest young players on tour who has such a diverse mix of shots in his game. That will give Engel a lot fo work to do.
