The Arizona Diamondbacks and the St. Louis Cardinals will meet on Monday night in the opening game of a four‑game National League series at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri.

Arizona Diamondbacks Betting Preview

The Arizona Diamondbacks enter Monday’s contest with a 39–38 overall record (3rd in the National League West) and a 15–21 mark on the road. The Diamondbacks offense has been inconsistent this season. Arizona has compiled 331 runs scored (17th in MLB), 130 doubles (6th in MLB), a .239 team batting average and 68 home runs which ranks a rather low 27th in Major League Baseball.

The Diamondbacks arrive at tomorrow’s game in below average form. Arizona has lost three of the team’s last five games played this season, including a 7–0 shutout loss to the Los Angeles Angels five days ago.

Arizona will turn to right hander Merrill Kelly in this contest. In twelve starts made this season, Kelly has compiled a 5–6 win‑loss record, a 5.81 ERA, a 1.51 WHIP and 42 strikeouts, while allowing 77 hits and 28 walks in 69.2 innings pitched. Kelly has struggled recently, allowing 6 or more earned runs in 2 of his last 3 starts made this season, including the Washington Nationals 14-1 defeat of the Arizona Diamondbacks earlier this month.

Offensively, the Arizona Diamondbacks lineup features outfielder Corbin Carroll and second baseman Ketel Marte. Corbin Carroll has tallied a .281 batting average, 13 home runs, 42 RBIs, 36 walks and a .918 OPS (20th in MLB). Marte has amassed a .259 batting average, 12 home runs, 24 walks, 46 RBIs and a .765 OPS.

St. Louis Cardinals Betting Preview

The St. Louis Cardinals enter Monday night’s matchup with a 41–34 overall record (2nd in the National League Central) and a 21–17 mark at home. St. Louis arrives at this contest in subpar form. The Cardinals have lost three of the team’s last four games played this season, including a 14–6 loss to the Kansas City Royals earlier this week.

St. Louis will start right hander Andre Pallante in this game. In fourteen starts made this season, Pallante has compiled an 8–4 record, a 3.76 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP and 62 strikeouts, while allowing 67 hits and 25 walks in 76.2 innings pitched. Pallante has pitched at a high level, allowing 2 or fewer runs in three consecutive starts, including the Cardinals 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres.

Turning our attention to the Cardinals offense, the St. Louis lineup features outfielder Jordan Walker and first baseman Alec Burleson. Jordan Walker has compiled a .296 batting average (12th in MLB), 18 home runs (11th in MLB), 16 doubles, 59 RBIs (1st in MLB) and an .885 OPS. Alec Burleson has amassed a .281 batting average, 13 home runs, 54 RBIs (6th in MLB) and an .826 OPS.

Why the Arizona Diamondbacks will win.

• Starting pitching. Merrill Kelly has compiled a 5-6 record, a 1.51 WHIP and 42 strikeouts in 69.2 innings this season.

• Offensive upside. Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte continue to lead the Diamondbacks lineup.

Why the St. Louis Cardinals will win.

• Home field advantage. The Cardinals have played competitive baseball at Busch Stadium this season posting a 21-17 record.

• Starting pitching edge. In fourteen starts made this season, Andre Pallante has compiled an 8–4 record, a 3.76 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP and 62 strikeouts, while allowing 67 hits and 25 walks in 76.2 innings pitched.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. St. Louis Cardinals Prediction

In my view, this matchup favors the St. Louis Cardinals. Why? St. Louis starting pitcher Andre Pallante has pitched at a high level recently, allowing 2 or fewer runs in three consecutive starts, including the Cardinals 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres earlier this month while Arizona hurler Merrill Kelly has been far more inconsistent amassing a dreadful 5.81 ERA in twelve starts. With that said, the Cardinals are the side to be on in this one. I am backing the St. Louis Cardinals on the moneyline in this game.
