Oklahoma State Cowboys Betting Preview

Oklahoma State wasn’t looking too bad record-wise by late December, but the team has fallen on hard times since then with an abundance of losses. The Cowboys kicked things off on an 8-3 run featuring wins over Green Bay, St. Thomas MN, Southern Illinois, Miami, Tulsa, Seton Hall, Tarleton State, and Oral Roberts. The losses otherwise were versus FAU, Nevada, and Oklahoma. Since then it’s been a rough 2-5 stretch for Oklahoma State. They’ve beaten Kansas State and Colorado in that time with losses to Houston, West Virginia, Utah, BYU, and Arizona. That gives the Cowboys a 10-8 record through the first 18 games of the year.

In the Arizona game on Tuesday, Oklahoma State posted a 43-39 deficit in the first half. The Cowboys didn’t end up getting any closer than that, falling behind further on a 49-39 second half in a 92-78 loss. Bryce Thompson topped the scorers in that one with his 21 points, three boards, two assists, and one steal. Marchelus Avery also had 21 points off the bench, alongside three boards and two assists in 28 minutes of action.

Texas Tech Red Raiders Betting Preview

Over on the Texas Tech side, they’ve been quite the consistent team so far this season. The Red Raiders haven’t lost consecutive games yet, but they don’t have any extended win streaks either. Texas Tech opened on a 7-2 run with wins over Bethune-Cookman, Northwestern State, Wyoming, AR-Pine Bluff, Syracuse, Northern Colorado, and DePaul. A 2-2 run came next with wins over Oral Roberts and Lamar in between losses to Texas A&M and UCF. Since then it’s been a 5-1 run with a lone loss to Iowa State. The wins otherwise have come versus Utah, BYU, Kansas State, Arizona, and Cincinnati for a 14-4 overall run through 18 games thus far.

Matched up against Cincinnati on Tuesday, the Red Raiders came out of the break with a 42-38 edge. Texas Tech kept the pressure on from there with a 39-33 stretch and took the win 81-71 in the end. Leading the way was JT Toppin with 20 points, seven boards, and one assist. Chance McMillian added 17 points with three boards and two assists, while Christian Anderson came off the bench for 18 points, five rebounds and three assists with a trio of steals.

Why the Texas Tech Red Raiders will win

  • Texas Tech has won nine of its last 10 games at United Supermarkets Arena against non-AP-ranked opponents.
  • Oklahoma State has lost eight of its last nine road games following a home loss.
  • Oklahoma State has lost the first half in nine of its last 11 games against Conference opponents.

Why the Oklahoma State Cowboys will win

  • The road team has won six of Texas Tech’s last seven games.

Oklahoma State vs Texas Tech Prediction

I’ll stick with Texas Tech, but the line’s too thick to mess with. The Red Raiders hit the road to take out a pretty good Cincinnati team in their last game, shooting 45 percent from the field with a 34-27 rebounding edge and just eight turnovers. Texas Tech was quite permissive on defense (51.9 percent shooting) but held the Bearcats to just 3-of-14 (21.4 percent) from long range. That makes a combined 151 points in the last two games for Texas Tech, which is a nice total after just 61 points in a win over Kansas State on January 14.

As for OK State, they’re still scoring pretty well with 69 or more points in three straight games. The trouble is, the Cowboys are allowing quite a bit on defense as well: 83 or more in each of their last three losses. If Texas Tech can get the offense going, the Raiders should be okay here. You wouldn’t be crazy to take OK State with the hefty spread, though.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Texas Tech Red Raiders -17
