Saint Louis Billikens Betting Preview
The Billikens had a spotty run of games going back in December, but aside from that they’ve been doing well this season. St. Louis opened on a 5-2 stretch, taking out Avila, Loyola Marymount, Quinnipiac, UMass Lowell, and Jackson State in that time. Next came a 1-4 stretch with one win over Chicago State amid losses to San Francisco, Illinois State, Wofford, and Grand Canyon. The Billikens would go 6-1 over their next seven outings, taking out William Woods, Fordham, Saint Joseph’s, Saint Bonaventure, Richmond, and La Salle with a lone loss to VCU. Since then it’s been a pair of losses to George Washington and Dayton around a lone win over VCU. The result so far has been a 13-9 overall run through 22 games this year.
In the Dayton matchup back on Friday, the Billikens came out of the first half with a 37-25 deficit. Saint Louis came back with a 38-34 run from there but still lost 71-63 in the end. Leading the team in the losing effort was Gibson Jimerson with 21 points and two boards. Isaiah Swope added 15 points with five boards, three assists, and three steals. Dylan Warlick had 10 points off the bench in 18 minutes as well.
UMass Minutemen Betting Preview
Over on the UMass side, they’ve been a mixed bag this year, ultimately losing more than they’ve won so far. The Minutemen opened on a 3-7 run with losses to West Virginia, LA Tech, Hofstra, Temple, Florida State, Central Connecticut, and UMass Lowell. A 3-4 run came next with losses to Arizona State, Saint Joseph’s, Richmond, and George Mason alongside wins over Massachusetts-Boston, Northeastern, and Dayton. A 4-1 stretch has come since with wins over Fordham, La Salle, George Washington, and Duquesne alongside a lone loss to Rhode Island in that time, giving the Minutemen a 10-12 overall record this year.
Matched up against Duquesne in their Saturday outing, the Minutemen came into the locker room with a 25-24 advantage. UMass hit a 37-29 run the rest of the way and took the eventual victory 62-53 in the end. Rahsool Diggins led the team with 32 points with four rebounds and one steal. Also coming off the bench with a double-double was Daniel Hankins-Sanford, who contributed 12 points and 12 boards with three steals in 26 minutes of action.
Why the Massachusetts Minutemen will win
- Massachusetts has won seven of its last eight night games against Conference opponents.
- Saint Louis has lost each of its last seven Tuesday night road games against Conference opponents.
- Saint Louis has lost the first half in each of its last three games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
Saint Louis vs UMass Prediction
I’ll stick with Saint Louis, but you could probably make a case either way. The Billikens are coming off a sloppy game against a pretty good Dayton team in their latest home loss. St. Louis shot pretty well (46.9 percent) in that one and also rebounded pretty well (a 32-31 deficit). The major issue, however, was the 19 turnovers for 23 Flyers points which essentially lost the game for the Billikens. St. Louis has been below 65 points in five of their last six games now (a 3-3 run), so it’d be nice to see them hit the 70-point mark in this one.
As for UMass, they’re scoring pretty well themselves during this 5-2 run with 70 or more points in six of those outings. If Saint Louis can push the issue on offense (and avoid turnovers) here however, I think the Billikens can power one out.
Andrew’s Pick St. Louis Billikens -1.5
