Alcorn State Braves Betting Preview

The Braves opened the season on a lengthy losing streak and all looked lost. They’ve been doing better over the last six games, though. Alcorn State fell to Utah, Utah State, Xavier LA, Tulane, TCU, Washington, UC Riverside, South Alabama, Maryland, Wichita State, Oklahoma, Rice, UAB, and Jackson State in succession during their first 14 outings of the year. Consecutive wins over Alabama A&M and Alabama State came next, then a loss to Texas Southern. Since then it’s been a loss to Florida A&M in between wins over Prairie View and Bethune-Cookman, giving the Braves a 4-16 overall record so far this season through 20 games. 

In the Bethune-Cookman game on Monday, the Braves hit a 34-32 advantage in the first half. Alcorn State kept it up from there on a 36-29 run and took the victory 70-61 in the end. Marcus Tankersley posted 17 points with five rebounds in 34 minutes of work. Keionte Cornelius came off the bench for 13 points with two rebounds in 19 minutes of action as well. 

Southern Jaguars Betting Preview

Over on the Southern side, they’ve had some great winning runs and some ugly losing stretches this year, but have still managed to keep a decent record. The Jags lost to South Dakota, Iowa, East Texas A&M, and Texas A&M in their first five outings, then beat Champion Christian, LA Tech, Tulsa, and Lindsey Wilson in the next four. Losses to Ole Miss, LMU, USC, and Nebraska came next, then another winning streak. Southern has since beaten Texas Southern, Prairie View, Florida A&M, Bethune-Cookman, Grambling, AR-Pine Bluff, and MS Valley State in their last seven for a 12-8 overall run through 22 games so far this season. 

Matched up against the Delta Devils on Monday, the Jaguars came out of the first half with a 32-22 edge. Southern hit a 31-20 run the rest of the way in an eventual victory 63-42. The team’s only double-digit scorer was Jordan Johnson, who notched 16 points with three rebounds, three assists, and two steals in 32 minutes of work on the floor.

Alcorn State vs Southern Prediction 

I’ll stick with Southern. The Jaguars have a winnable road matchup here in order to keep their streak going. Southern didn’t have a ton of issues with MS Valley State in their latest win, posting 46.4 percent shooting with a 37-28 rebounding edge. The Jags went just 5-of-10 (50 percent) from the line, however, and gave up 14 turnovers. There are certainly a few things to clean up ahead of the weekend. Southern hasn’t been the highest-scoring team out there lately, but they’re winning games through solid defense. The Jaguars have given up fewer than 68 points in six of the seven games during this current win streak. 

As for Alcorn State, they’re looking better lately and may very well put up a decent showing in this one. The Braves are 2-1 in their last three games, scoring 70 or more points in both victories during that trio. I like Alcorn State to hang around in this one initially, with Southern’s defense eventually wearing them down on the way to a cover.
