Campbell Fighting Camels Betting Preview
Last year Campbell posted a forgettable campaign, going 14-18 overall with an 8-10 run in CAA games. The Camels finished near the middle of the pack in the standings with that effort. Their final game was a loss to Monmouth in the CAA Tournament.
The Camels kicked things off this year with a routine win over Pfeiffer. Campbell was up 44-24 by halftime and cruised on 52 points the rest of the way for a 96-49 blowout victory. Bragi Gudmundsson led the team with 15 points, and Terren Frank added 10 points with five boards in 16 minutes.
Virginia Cavaliers Betting Preview
Over on the Virginia side, they’re coming off a 23-11 overall record last year with a 13-7 run in a tough ACC. The Cavaliers landed behind North Carolina and Duke in the standings. Virginia would make it to the First Four in the national tourney however, ultimately falling to Colorado State.
New interim head coach Ron Sanchez takes the reins at Virginia this year after the surprise retirement of Tony Bennett. He’ll get a couple of starters back from last season but does have some significant losses. Ryan Dunn was drafted, while key players like Reece Beekman and Jordan Minor were lost to graduation. Virginia will take on Coppin State and Villanova after this game.
Why the Virginia Cavaliers will win
- Virginia has won 28 of its last 29 games at John Paul Jones Arena against non-AP-ranked opponents.
- Virginia has won the first half in eight of its last nine games against the Coastal Athletic Association at John Paul Jones Arena.
Why the Campbell Fighting Camels will win
- Campbell has won four of its last five games against non-conference opponents.
- Virginia has lost the first half in three of its last four night games against non-conference opponents.
Campbell vs Virginia Prediction
I’ll stay with Virginia. The Cavs have long been a lower-scoring methodical team, which never did bode well for making up deficits on the scoreboard. This season Virginia will focus on youth and scoring, which should lead to a new look overall. Not having Bennett on the floor may lead to some missteps in the early games, but Virginia should be okay in this opener.
As for Campbell, they posted a nice overall win versus a mismatched Pfeiffer team in their opener. The Camels shot a smooth 55.2 percent from the field with 42 rebounds but went just 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) from outside. Campbell won’t get too many scoring opportunities in this one.
