Stan Wawrinka and Borna Coric meet in the final of the 2025 Aix-en-Provence Challenger on Sunday, May 4, 2025. Here’s our Stan Wawrinka vs Borna Coric prediction. This preview will also include a Stan Wawrinka vs Borna Coric pick.
Stan Wawrinka Preview
Stan Wawrinka reached the final of the 2025 Aix-en-Provence Challenger with a straight sets win over Borna Gojo. Wawrinka converted the only successful breakpoint of the first set to take a 2-1 lead and went to consolidate for a 6-4 lead. In the second set, Wawrinka went up a break early on, but dropped his serve at 4-3. But that lapse was only momentarily as he broke Gojo to take a 5-4 lead and served to love for the match.
Wawrinka had beaten Ugo Blanchet, top seed Alexei Popyrin, and American Next Gen star Nishesh Basavareddy earlier in the week. Wawrinka is competing in his second Challenger event of the season. He has compiled an 8-9 record for the year. Four of those wins have been in this tournament, in which he is making his second main draw appearance of his career. Wawrinka’s last title win was at the Prague 2 Challenger in 2020. The Swiss will rise at least 26 spots to inside the Top 150.
Borna Coric Preview
Borna Coric reached his fourth ATP Challenger final of the season on his debut in Aix-en-Provence. The Croat defeated Peru’s Ignacio Buse 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in two hours and 36 minutes. Coric finished the match with five aces and landed 61% of first serves in play. He won 65% of first serve points (34/52) and 52% of second serve points (17/33).
Coric saved four of seven breakpoints on his serve. The 28-year-old defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert, Arthur Rinderknech, and Mariano Navone earlier in the tournament. Coric has scooped three Challenger titles in March and is projected to re-enter the Top 100 regardless of Sunday’s result.
Stan Wawrinka vs Borna Coric Head-To-Head
Wawrinka and Coric have met five times at all levels. Wawrinka leads Coric 4-1 in the head-to-head and defeated him in straight sets at the Neapol Challenger this season.
Stan Wawrinka vs Borna Coric Prediction
Wawrinka, who is 40, will have a shot at Challenger history on Sunday. If he wins, he’ll become the oldest champion at this level, surpassing Ivo Karlovic, who was 39 when he won in Calgary back in 2018. It’s been five years since the Swiss laid his hands on a trophy and lost his most recent final in Umag two years ago. But he’s got a good chance of ending that long drought. Wawrinka owns this matchup, having beaten Coric four times in five meetings. He also defeated the Croat when they met in Naples on clay at the end of March and thereby ended Coric’s 16-match winning run. Coric still opens as the favorite with the oddsmakers, but Wawrinka’s level throughout the week set him apart from the rest of the field. I’m backing the upset here and for history to be rewritten.
