Marta Kostyuk and Anastasia Potapova meet in the round of 16 of the 2025 WTA Madrid Open on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. Here’s our Marta Kostyuk vs Anastasia Potapova prediction. This preview will also include a Marta Kostyuk vs Anastasia Potapova pick.
Marta Kostyuk Preview
Marta Kostyuk is the 24th seed at the Madrid Open, and she reached the round of 16 in this tournament for the first time. Kostyuk defeated Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova in a topsy-turvy match in three sets. Kostyuk won the first set 6-0 in 37 minutes, breaking Kudermetova’s serve three times.
In the second set, Kudermetova raised her level and managed to level the match after rallying from 1-3 down to win the set 6-4. Kostyuk was not to be denied in the third set, as both players broke each other’s serves four times, before the Ukrainian landed the telling blow in the 10th game of the set, converting on her second match point.
Kostyuk finished the match with two aces and five double faults. She landed 51% of first serves in play and won 68% of first serve points (28/41). Kostyuk won 68% of second serve points and saved five of nine breakpoints. Kostyuk, who recently fell out of the top 30 after skipping Stuttgart, improves to 13-9 for the season. This is her first clay-court tournament of the season. She has never advanced beyond the second round in Madrid in five previous main draws. She had beaten Emma Raducanu in three sets in her opening match.
Anastasia Potapova Preview
Anastasia Potapova is unseeded in Madrid and needed to win three matches to reach the last 16. Potapova started her campaign with a comeback win over big-hitting Ashlyn Krueger. She won that one 6-7, 6-4, 6-2. Her most impressive victory was in the second round when she knocked out Olympic gold medalist Qinwen Zheng in straight sets. That’s her first Top 10 win of the season.
Potapova defeated former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in three sets in the third round. Potapova was down a break in the deciding set, not once but twice, and saved two match points at 4-6 in the tie-break. She prevailed 8-6 in the breaker. The Russian will contest her maiden fourth-round match at the Madrid Open. Potapova improves to 16-6 for the season and is 4-0 on clay this year, although she withdrew from Stuttgart because of injury.
Marta Kostyuk vs Anastasia Potapova Head-To-Head
Kostyuk and Potapova have met three times on the WTA level. Potapova leads the head-to-head 2-1, winning in Miami and Birmingham in 2023, but Kostyuk won their last match at the 2024 Indian Wells. This will be their first meeting on clay.
Marta Kostyuk vs Anastasia Potapova Prediction
I like Kostyuk here. She’s surprised me with how efficient she’s been to get here, and it almost feels like that top 30 exit served as a motivation for her to deliver in Madrid. She’s 36th in the rankings, just three spots above Potapova, and cannot afford to slip further, especially with Roland Garros seedings coming into play next month. I’ll take a shot at Kostyuk to win on the money line.
