Draper won 59% of second serve points (19/32) and saved four of six breakpoints.

Gael Monfils Preview

Gael Monfils is ranked 42nd in the ATP rankings and is competing in his 18th French Open main draw. Monfils won his opening match this week against Bolivia’s Hugo Dellien to register his 40th victory at Roland Garros. Monfils trailed by two sets to love, but won the next three sets to prevail in the unlikeliest of circumstances. The match lasted three hours and 36 minutes. The Frenchman became the first player to attain 12 five-set match wins in this tournament in the Open Era.  

Monfils hit 58 winners and 50 unforced errors which included 21 aces and four double faults. He landed 61% of first serves in play and won 74% of first serve points (67/90). Monfils won 47% of second serve points (27/58) and saved 11 of 16 breakpoints. Monfils has not reached the third round of the French Open since 2019.

It’s a match befitting of the night session on Chatrier. We know Gael Monfils’ shotmaking ability. He’s an artist and a showman and he comes alive in a setting like this where the crowd is by his side and his 38-year-old legs get loose. He simply elevates these moments and many will recall his dramatic win over Sebastian Baez two years ago. But the bittersweet realism is that he’s likely to fall short. I think Draper will be a touch too good for La Monf. Draper will defuse all that energy that Monfils and the French crowd will throw at him. He’s one of those players who can seamlessly open up the court with just a couple of powerful shots. Monfils might nick a set to get the crowd roaring, but over five sets, it’s too much to ask from him to win.
