The UMass Minutemen and the UConn Huskies meet Friday in college football action from Rentschler Field in East Hartford. Here’s a UMass vs UConn prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best UMass vs UConn pick. We will examine the recent form and player performances for both teams, as well as the recent betting trends and streaks pertaining to this matchup. As we conclude, we will tie it all together with a summary that produces a sensible pick for a favorable betting outcome in this game.

UMass Minutemen Betting Preview

The Minutemen started out the season on a great run but it’s been choppy since then. UMass beat Rutgers, Sacred Heart, Stonehill and Sacramento State right out of the gate for a 4-0 beginning, then fell to Eastern Michigan 38-14 on October 3. Game six was another loss, though this one was tighter 20-19 versus Miami-Ohio. That made for a 4-2 opening.

Last weekend versus Buffalo, the Minutemen notched another close loss. UMass was up 15-8 at the break after giving up a safety in the second quarter. The Minutemen allowed a field goal as time expired and eventually lost in overtime 25-18. QB Logan Inagawa was 14-of-25 for 168 yards and a pick. Elijah Faulkner had 23 carries for 84 yards and a touchdown.

UConn Huskies Betting Preview

Over on the UConn side, they’ve been up and down all year so far. The Huskies opened up on a 2-1 stretch, losing to Maryland in between wins over Lafayette and Southern Miss. UConn lost consecutive games to Miami-Ohio and Syracuse after that, but then took out Temple in a road matchup. Through six games so far the Huskies are 3-3 for a .500 record.

Back on October 10 versus Temple, the Huskies fought through a back-and-forth first half (14-14) and ended up going to the locker room with a one-score lead 24-17. UConn would add another TD in the fourth quarter on the way to a 34-20 win. QB Kalieb Osborne was 17-of-23 for 257 yards while Trey Cornist led the rush with seven totes for 114 yards and a score.

UMass vs UConn Prediction

I’ll stick with UConn. The Huskies weren’t great on third downs (5-of-12) in their win over Temple but they did most other things pretty well—outside of a fairly sizable 436 yards allowed on defense, anyway. UConn gathered 505 yards themselves without a turnover, which included 248 yards on the ground. That makes 21 or more points in five of six games so far for the Huskies.

As for UMass, they had two turnovers with just 17 first downs and 5-of-15 on third-down tries in their loss to Buffalo. The Minutemen had two takeaways on defense while giving up 19 first downs and 217 rush yards. UMass has finished below 20 points in three straight games—all losses.

Andrew Jett's Pick: UConn Huskies -16.5
