We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Illinois vs Michigan State pick. As we conclude, we will tie it all together with a summary that produces a sensible pick for a favorable betting outcome in this game.

Illinois Fighting Illini Betting Preview

The Fighting Illini have had their ups and downs this year, despite being at home for four of their first five outings. Illinois kicked off with a 42-23 win over UAB, then lost 31-27 versus Duke in game two. The Illini came back with a 48-10 win over Southern Illinois but couldn’t keep it going with a 42-19 loss in a tough matchup versus Ohio State for a 2-2 start.

Last weekend versus Purdue, the Illini were down 13-0 by the second quarter. Illinois added a TD from there and went into the break down 13-7, though. Unfortunately the Illini couldn’t keep it going well and lost a tough one at home 24-17. QB Katin Houser was 21-of-37 for 225 yards, two scores and a pick. Collin Dixon caught 10 balls for 116 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

Michigan State Spartans Betting Preview

Over on the Michigan State side, they’ve also had some mixed results this year among some tough matchups. The Spartans did kick off the season with two consecutive wins though, dispatching Toledo 30-20 and Eastern Michigan 35-7. After that came consecutive losses in the next pair, as Michigan State fell to Notre Dame 27-10 and Nebraska 31-13 to go 2-2.

Matched up against Wisconsin last weekend the Spartans gave up two touchdowns and a field goal before they could respond in the second quarter, leading to a 17-3 deficit at the break. Things only got worse from there and Michigan State ended up losing 31-3. QB Alessio Milivojevic was 15-of-32 for 103 yards and Jayden Savoury had four catches for 26 yards.

Illinois vs Michigan State Prediction

I’ll stick with Michigan State but I don’t like it. The Spartans put up another rough offensive performance against a good opponent last weekend, posting just 235 yards and a 5-of-18 success rate on third downs. Michigan State gave up 373 yards on defense, including 228 rush yards. The Spartans have been below 14 points in three straight games now—all losses.

As for Illinois, they couldn’t keep pace with a decent Purdue team last weekend. The Illini did bag 26 first downs and a pretty solid 7-of-13 success rate on third-down tries but it didn’t translate into points (17) or time of possession (28:27) very well. Illinois has scored fewer than 20 points in consecutive weeks, so I’m not thrilled about their win/cover chances here either.
