Xavier Musketeers Betting Preview
The Musketeers had a rough run going from late November into early January, but aside from that they’ve been quite consistent in the win column this year. Xavier opened on a winning streak over Texas Southern, IUPUI, Jackson State, Wake Forest, Siena, and South Carolina, then hit a 2-2 run. Those wins were over South Carolina State and Morgan State with losses otherwise versus Michigan and TCU. A 1-5 stretch ensued with a win over Seton Hall among losses to Cincinnati, UConn, Marquette, Georgetown, and St. John’s, then came a 4-1 run. The lone loss in that time was versus St. John’s; otherwise, it was wins over DePaul, Villanova, Marquette, and UConn for a 13-8 overall run across 21 games so far this season.
In the UConn game on Saturday, the Musketeers were down by a point at the break. Xavier fought back on a 76-72 stretch and took the eventual win 76-72 in comeback fashion at home. Leading the team in scoring were Zach Freemantle (five rebounds) and Dailyn Swain (four assists), each with 15 points. Dante Maddox chipped in 14 points in 23 minutes off the bench.
Creighton Bluejays Betting Preview
Over on the Creighton side, they’ve got a couple of spotty stretches in the books so far this year, but they’ve been winning a lot otherwise. The Jays opened with victories over UT Rio Grande Valley, Fairleigh Dickinson, Houston Christian, and Kansas City. The next three were losses to Nebraska, San Diego State, and Texas A&M, then came wins over Notre Dame, Kansas, and UNLV. A 2-3 run commenced after that with wins over Villanova and St. John’s mixed among losses to Alabama, Georgetown, and Marquette. Since then it’s been five straight wins as Creighton has toppled Butler, Providence, UConn, DePaul, and Seton Hall in succession, resulting in a 14-6 overall run through 20 games thus far.
Matched up against Seton Hall in their Saturday game, the Bluejays were up by four points at the break. Creighton surged in the second half on a 41-20 stretch and took the victory 79-54 in the end. Tops in scoring was Ryan Kalkbrenner with 23 points, neon boards, three assists, three blocks, and two steals. Steven Ashworth added 17 points with nine assists and two rebounds in 33 minutes, and Isaac Traudt had 10 bench points with two rebounds.
Why the Creighton Bluejays will win
- Creighton has won each of its last eight games against Conference opponents at CHI Health Center Omaha.
- Xavier has lost each of its last four road night games against Conference opponents.
- Xavier has lost the first half in six of its last seven night games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
Why the Xavier Musketeers will win
- Xavier has won four of its last five games against the Big East Conference.
Xavier vs Creighton Prediction
I’ll lean toward Creighton. The Jays started a bit slowly versus Seton Hall in their last game but eventually asserted their dominance. Creighton ended up shooting a nice 58.3 percent from the field with 29 rebounds and 19 team assists. The 12 turnovers were just about the only thing worth complaining about—outside of the five of 17 missed free throws (70.6 percent). In any case, Creighton has now won five straight games, scoring 73 or more points in four of those.
As for Xavier, they’ve been looking better on this 4-1 stretch. The Musketeers have finished below 70 points in two of those five games but otherwise, they’re scoring quite well themselves. I like this one to be a fairly high-total finish with Creighton powering it out in the end. Should be an entertaining game for the most part.
