Wofford Terriers Betting Preview

The Terriers have been a mixed bag in the record column so far this year, hence the .500 run. Wofford opened on a 4-7 stretch, taking losses to Lipscomb, Presbyterian, Duke, Milwaukee, Portland State, Elon, and Charleston in that time. The Terriers would hit a solid 7-2 stretch in their next nine, taking out Saint Louis, Kentucky Christian, East Tennessee State, Western Carolina, Furman, Mercer, and the Citadel with losses to UNC Greensboro and Chattanooga otherwise. It’s been a 1-3 stretch since then with a win over UNC Greensboro among losses to Samford, VMI, and Chattanooga, giving Wofford a 12-12 run through their first 24 outings. 

In the Chattanooga matchup on Wednesday, the Terriers hit a slim 37-35 advantage in the first half. Wofford was outpaced 44-33 the rest of the way, however, resulting in a 79-70 defeat. Leading team scorer Corey Tripp posted 20 points with two rebounds and three assists. Dillon Bailey was the only other player on the team to finish in double-figures with 13 points, one rebound, and one assist in 27 minutes of work on the floor. 

Mercer Bears Betting Preview

Over on the Mercer side, they’ve similarly had mixed results this year as well. The Bears opened on a 6-4 run with wins over Virginia Lynchburg, Trinity Baptist, Jacksonville, West Georgia, Stetson, and Chicago State. After losses to Queens U and Winthrop, Mercer took out Georgia State, Chattanooga, and VMI before losses to East Tennessee State, Western Carolina, Samford, and Wofford. Since then it’s been a 2-3 run with losses to Furman, Chattanooga, and Samford among wins over UNC Greensboro and The Citadel for an 11-13 opening run so far.

Matched up against Samford on the road Wednesday, the Bears went into the second half holding a 10-point deficit. Mercer didn’t end up getting any closer on a 48-37 run from there and took the loss 100-79 in the end. Tyler Johnson set the pace for the team in the losing effort with his 26 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Brady Shoulders had 13 points with six boards and three assists, while Marcus Overstreet came off the bench for 11 points and 14 rebounds with a pair of steals in 17 minutes of action.

Wofford vs Mercer Prediction 

I’ll stay with Wofford. This should be a decent matchup if both teams play to their capabilities, though. The Terriers didn’t play all that great in their latest loss to Chattanooga though—especially in the second half. Wofford shot just 41.1 percent from the field overall and gave up 53.7 percent on the other side. The 14 turnovers for 20 Mocs points were what really killed Wofford’s chances. That said, the rebounding (a 37-25 advantage) was solid. The Terriers have given up 74 or more points in each loss during this current 1-3 stretch, so it’d be nice to see them keep Mercer’s shooting percentage down here. 

The good news for Wofford is that they did just that in these teams’ first meeting this year. The Terriers held Mercer to just 29.8 percent shooting in a 69-49 home win back on January 18. I don’t expect such a dominant effort this time, but the Terriers should still have control.
