Wagner Seahawks Betting Preview

Wagner is coming off a pretty mediocre season overall. The Seahawks went 14-16 overall in 2024-25 with a 6-10 run in Northeast Conference games. That gave Wagner a finish just two spots out of the basement in the NEC standings, ahead of only Chicago State and Le Moyne. The Seahawks had initially been picked to finish tied for first place in the division by the annual preseason coaches’ poll as well. After finishing off the regular season with a pair of losses to LIU and Central Connecticut, Wagner lost their first game of the NEC Tournament versus St. Francis PA on March 5 by a score of 58-55.

Going into the 2025-26 campaign, the Seahawks have head coach Donald Copeland back at the helm following a disappointing year. He’ll get just one of his starters back—and just two players from last year’s roster altogether. That pair is Zavier Finch (4.4 PPG) and Makhai Anderson. Finch in particular has a bit of experience. Due to all the injuries on last year’s squad, he got quite a bit of time on the court throughout the season.

VCU Rams Betting Preview

Over on the VCU side, they’re coming off a pretty successful campaign in 2024-25—despite a quick finish on the national stage. The Rams went 28-7 overall with a nice 15-3 run in the Atlantic 10. That would put VCU atop the standings (tied record-wise with George Mason), and they were able to power out wins versus St. Bonaventure. Loyola Chicago and George Mason on the way to the conference tournament championship. In the first round of the NCAA Tournament however, VCU took an 80-71 loss to BYU and were sent packing for good.

This year the Rams will get themselves a complete rebuild on the court. Head coach Phil Martelli enters for his first season, and he won’t have any starters from last year’s NCAA Tournament group. That said, five players from that team have chose to stick around, bringing national tournament experience with them. That quintet is Michael Belle, Christian Fermin, Terrence Hill, Brandon Jennings and Obi Okafor. They’ll be joined by intriguing transfers like Barry Evans (13.3 PPG) and Keyshawn Mitchell (8.5 PPG), both from Bryant.

Wagner vs VCU Prediction

I’ll probably stick with VCU. It’s easy to sleep on the Rams this year, what with the massive roster rebuild, new head coach and no returning starters. That said, VCU has managed to piece together a pretty good-looking roster via transfers and a few holdovers. The front and backcourts should be strong, though the bench may leave a little to be desired without a few names stepping up into more prominent roles. It’s going to be an interesting season, that’s for sure. Still, VCU does have a pretty high ceiling if all goes well this year.

As for Wagner, they’re entering what’s effectively a complete rebuild after retaining just seven percent of their scoring from a year ago. The on-court product should be pretty good, relatively speaking, but it remains to be seen if the Seahawks will be able to manage an improvement on their sub-.500 record from las season. For now I don’t think they’ll be able to keep a cover pace in the opener.

Andrew Jett's Pick: VCU Rams TBA
