The Florida Gators and the Vanderbilt Commodores will meet on Saturday afternoon in an SEC Tournament semifinal matchup at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

Vanderbilt Commodores Betting Preview

The Vanderbilt Commodores enter Saturday’s contest with a 25–7 record, including an 11-7 record in conference play and an 8-4 mark on the road. Vanderbilt has amassed recent wins over Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia and the Texas A&M Aggies, while dropping games to Alabama, Florida, Arkansas and the Kentucky Wildcats.

More recently, in the Vanderbilt Commodores 86-82 victory over the Tennessee Volunteers six days ago, Vanderbilt guard Tyler Tanner amassed 25 points (7 of 9 shooting from the field: 9 of 10 shooting from the free-throw line), 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals demonstrating his ability to lead the Commodores backcourt.

The Vanderbilt Commodores average 86.9 points (10th in country) on 47.9 percent shooting from the field (38th in nation) and 35.4 percent shooting from three‑point range per game. Defensively, the Commodores are allowing 75.1 points per contest.

Senior guard Duke Miles leads the Vanderbilt Commodores averaging 15.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.6 steals per game. Forward Tyler Nickel contributes 13.7 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.2 assists per contest, while sophomore guard Tyler Tanner provides further backcourt depth averaging 19.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game.

Florida Gators Betting Preview

The Florida Gators enter Saturday afternoon’s game with a 26–6 overall record, including a rather impressive 16–2 mark in conference play and an 8-2 record on the road. The Gators have amassed wins over Miami, Georgia, Texas A&M, Arkansas and the Florida State Seminoles, while losing games Duke, Missouri and the Arizona Wildcats.

It is noteworthy that these two teams met earlier this season. Who prevailed? Who played well in the game? In the Florida Gators 98-94 win over the Vanderbilt Commodores two months ago, Florida guard Xavier Lee tallied 20 points (8 of 13 shooting from the field: 3 of 7 shooting from three-point range), 6 rebounds and 2 assists.

The Florida Gators average 87.7 points (7th in country) on 48.2 percent shooting from the field (33rd in nation) and 31.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc per game. Shifting our focus to the defensive side of the basketball, the Gators are allowing opponents 71.7 points per contest.

Sophomore guard Boogie Fland is averaging 11.6 points, 2.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.9 steals per game. Junior forward Thomas Haugh contributes 17.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal a contest. Junior center Rueben Chinyelu provides the Gators with further frontcourt depth averaging 11.4 points, 11.7 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per contest, while senior guard Xaivian Lee is averaging with 11.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game.

Why the Vanderbilt Commodores Will Win

• Balanced scoring. Duke Miles and Tyler Tanner provide consistent and reliable scoring.

• Momentum. The Vanderbilt Commodores arrive at tomorrow’s contest on the heels of a three-game winning streak.

Why the Florida Gators Will Win

• Offensive edge. The Florida Gators average 87.7 points (7th in country) on 48.2 percent shooting from the field (33rd in nation) and 31.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc per game.

• Balanced scoring: The Gators have five players scoring over 11 points a game.

• Defensive advantage. The Florida Gators are allowing opponents 71.7 points per contest. Conversely, the Commodores are allowing 75.1 points per contest.

• Confidence. The Florida Gators defeated the Vanderbilt Commodores earlier this season.

Vanderbilt Commodores vs. Florida Gators Prediction

In my view, Vanderbilt’s pace and defensive discipline give the Commodores a real chance to stay inside the number (8.5) in this contest. The Gators have an exceptional team and arrive at this contest on a 12-game winning streak. However, the Commodores ability to potentially slow down Florida’s transition game and force more half‑court possessions could be the difference in this one. For the reasons just noted, I am backing the Vanderbilt Commodores plus the 8.5 points in this game.

Hans Geevers's Pick: Vanderbilt +8.5
