The Utah Tech Trailblazers and the New Mexico Lobos will meet Monday night in a season opening college basketball matchup at The Pit in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Let’s take a look at this game from a betting perspective.

Utah Tech Trailblazers Betting Preview

The Utah Tech Trailblazers enter Monday’s season opener after posting a 19-15 overall record (11-7 WAC Conference record) in the 2025 season. The Trailblazers advanced to the WAC Tournament semifinals after defeating Abilene Christian before falling to California Baptist. Utah Tech finished the season by posting its best Division I campaign in program history and now begins its first season as a member of the Big Sky Conference.

The Utah Tech Trailblazers averaged 76.8 points per game last season while allowing 74.9 points per contest. The Trailblazers displayed the ability to score against quality competition but were inconsistent on the defensive end of the floor.

Forward Ethan Potter was a key contributor for the Trailblazers last season, averaging 16.8 points and 7.8 rebounds on 59.8% shooting from the field per game. Potter earned First Team All-WAC honors, led the conference in rebounding and field goal percentage. Potter returns for a fifth season as the focal point of Utah Tech’s offense.

New Mexico Lobos Betting Preview

The New Mexico Lobos enter Monday night’s matchup after posting a 26-11 overall record (13-7 Mountain West Conference record) during the 2025-26 season. The Lobos advanced to the Mountain West Tournament semifinals and made a run to the NIT semifinals in the postseason. New Mexico enters the 2026 campaign as the preseason favorite to win the Mountain West Conference.

The New Mexico Lobos averaged 81.2 points per game while allowing 70.9 points per contest last season. The Lobos were one of the better offensive teams in the Mountain West and consistently played at a high pace throughout the year.

Guard Jake Hall was a standout performer for the Lobos last season, averaging 16.4 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Hall was named Mountain West Freshman of the Year, earned First Team All-Mountain West honors and enters the season as the Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year after setting the conference freshman scoring record with 605 points.

Why the Utah Tech Trailblazers Will Win

• Proven scorer. Ethan Potter averaged 16.8 points and 7.8 rebounds on 59.8% shooting from the field per game last season.

• Momentum. Utah Tech is coming off the best Division I season in program history.

• Offensive capability. The Trailblazers averaged 76.8 points per game in 2025.

Why the New Mexico Lobos Will Win

• Winning pedigree. New Mexico posted a 26-11 record and reached the NIT semifinals last season.

• Offensive firepower. The Lobos averaged 81.2 points per game in 2025.

• Star power. Jake Hall averaged 16.4 points per game and was named Mountain West Freshman of the Year last season.

• Home court advantage. New Mexico opens the season at The Pit, one of the premier venues in college basketball.

Utah Tech Trailblazers vs. New Mexico Lobos Prediction

In my view, this matchup favors the New Mexico Lobos covering the number. Why? The Lobos enter the 2026season after posting a rather impressive 26-11 win-loss record, advancing to the NIT semifinals and earning preseason favorite status in the Mountain West Conference. New Mexico also returns talented guard Jake Hall, who averaged 16.4 points per game last season and was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Year.

Utah Tech returns a quality player in Ethan Potter, but the Trailblazers are stepping up in class against a New Mexico team that averaged more than 81 points per game last season and has legitimate NCAA Tournament aspirations entering the year. With that said, I am backing the New Mexico Lobos to cover the 17.5 points in this game.

Hans Geevers's Pick: New Mexico -17.5
