What Should We Make of UConn?

One of the great mysteries of this season all across college basketball is what exactly we should think about this UConn team. Connecticut is one of the most talented teams in all of the country, but they have had some trouble against some pretty awful teams. Two games ago against Seton Hall, UConn lost 69-68 in overtime. Against Villanova in the last game, for at least a half, it looked like they might lose again, but they scored 40 points in the second half to come out on top. Even though they won, they still were only 4-19 from deep, which must be better. Liam McNeely had a strong game, putting up 20 points, seven rebounds, and two assists.

UConn has an 18-8 record overall, but they have only gone 11-15 against the spread. The stats overall for UConn have been good, but there are too many games where the offense hasn’t made the shots needed. The Huskies are averaging 77.8 points per game, while the defense is giving up 68.1 points per game. They are averaging 13.8 free throws per game, which is 169th in the league. Solo Ball is averaging 14.7 points while shooting 42.3 percent from the field and 36.6 percent from behind the three-point. Liam McNeely has dealt with injuries, but he’s healthy now and averaging 15.4 points. The first time they faced off against St. John’s, they only scored 62 points, and the offense has to find a way to get going here.

Why UConn Will Beat St. John’s

  • Connecticut has won each of its last eight games at Madison Square Garden.

Is St. John’s a Title Contender?

When St John’s hired Rick Pitino, there were many questions about whether he was the answer to get the team back to relevance. As we get ready to end the second year with him in charge, the answer to that seems pretty straightforward: yes. The Red Storm have won 11 of 12 games, with the only loss coming by two points against Villanova. Mostly, they have beaten up bad teams, and the last game was no different. The Red Storm scored 82 points against DePaul, while the defense gave up 58 points. St John’s used a balanced attack with four different players putting up at least 13 points.

St John’s has a 23-4 record, and they have gone 16-0 at home. They want to push the pace, and they are averaging 78.3 points per game. The offense gets the attention but the defense is elite, and it’s what led them to success in the first game. RJ Luis Jr has been the top player for St John’s, averaging 17.6 points while shooting 44.5 percent from the field and 26.6 percent from behind the three-point line.

Why St John’s Will Beat UConn

  • St. John’s has won each of its last 12 home games.
  • Connecticut has lost three of its last four games when playing with a rest advantage.
  • Connecticut has lost the first half in each of its last four games against Conference opponents.

UConn vs St. John’s Prediction

It could be easy to be tempted to take the over with two good offenses, but we saw what happened the first time these two teams faced off; points were hard to come by. People want to talk about this St. John’s offense, but the defense is elite, and they will step up significantly here. UConn’s offense is elite, averaging 77.8 points, but they already struggled against St John’s defense once, and it will happen again here. St John’s offense will find more success than UConn’s but this isn’t a game where they will score 75 or 80 points. This total is too high. Back the under.
