The Islanders aren’t doing terribly in the record column this year despite a couple of spotty runs. In the Houston Christian home rematch back on Monday, the Islanders left the locker room sporting a 33-31 deficit. Leading the team in scoring along the way was Jordan Roberts, who came off the bench for 16 points in 21 minutes of work. Garry Clark topped the starters with his 14 points and nine rebounds with two assists in 38 minutes out there.

Over on the McNeese State side, they started out pretty choppy but they’ve been playing great since late December. The Cowboys went 5-5 in their first 10 outings, losing to South Dakota State, Alabama, Liberty, Santa Clara, and Mississippi State in that time. Since then McNeese has lost just once versus Nicholls. Otherwise, it’s been wins over Louisiana, New Orleans, SE Louisiana, East Texas A&M, Northwestern State, Nicholls, Houston Christian, Lamar, Stephen F Austin, UTRGV, Texas A&M-CC, Incarnate Word, Northwestern State, East Texas A&M, New Orleans, and SE Louisiana in succession. That gives the Cowboys a 21-6 record through their first 27 games of the 2024-25 season. 

Matched up against SE Louisiana in their road rematch on Monday, the Cowboys took a 44-41 edge into the second half. McNeese put up another 44-41 run from there and took the win 88-82 in the end. Javohn Garcia topped the scorers with 18 points with six boards and four assists. Joe Charles notched a double-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds and two assists.

I’ll stay with the Cowboys. McNeese is coming off a nice road win over a decent SE Louisiana team. The Cowboys shot a red-hot 56.6 percent from the field in that one and posted a 35-29 rebounding advantage. McNeese did miss nine of their 26 free throws (65.4 percent) however, and had 12 turnovers for 18 Lions points. 

The last time these teams met up back on January 27 was a tight 74-73 road win for the Cowboys. McNeese shot well in that one (48.2 percent) but did get into a bit of turnover trouble with 12 for 13 Isles points. I like the Cowboys to have an easier time in the home rematch.
