Southern Utah Thunderbirds Betting Preview
The Thunderbirds showed some (fairly minimal) improvement last season overall, eventually carving out a 12-19 record. The conference play took a step back thanks to injuries however, as Southern Utah went just 4-12 in WAC outings. That would give the team a second-to-last place finish in the standings, ahead of only Utah Tech at 2-14 in the conference. Following a sketchy 1-4 run to finish off the regular season, the Thunderbirds fell to the aforementioned Utah Tech in the first round of the WAC Tournament, ending their season on March 11.
Heading into the 2025-26 campaign, the Thunderbirds will get head coach Rob Jeter back for his third year on the job. He’ll get just three players returning from last season’s team though: Lorenzo Abellar (2.6 PPG), Kai Burdick (2.3 PPG) and Langston Binns. Five of the Thunderbirds’ incoming players are from Division I squads though, including Isaiah Cottrell, who played two seasons with UNLV.
Arizona State Sun Devils Betting Preview
Over on the Arizona State side, they regressed last year from an already low-expectation 14-18 run in 2023-24. The Sun Devils would ultimately go just 13-20 overall with a 4-16 run in a very difficult Big 12. Arizona State finished three games behind UCF in the standings and ahead of only Colorado at 3-17 in the conference. The Sun Devils closed the regular season on a 1-10 run (beating only Kansas State) and fell in their first game of the conference tournament. In the College Basketball Crown, Arizona State lost in the first round to Nebraska on March 31.
Coming into the 2025-26 campaign, the Sun Devils get head coach Bobby Hurley back in his 11th year on the sideline. Arizona State won’t have any starters back this year and loses 11 total names. That group includes Jayden Quaintance (9.4 PPG) and Joson Sanon (11.9 PPG). The only scholarship returnee is sophomore Trevor Best (6.2 PPG), who will join new arrivals like Moe Odum, Adante Holiman and Anthony Johnson.

Southern Utah vs Arizona State Prediction
I’ll stay with the Sun Devils. Arizona State is going to be a completely different team this season, and head coach Hurley has begun to be put on the year-to-year plan himself. That means it’s a make-or-break year for the Sun Devils, and a year full of potential question marks. The good news is that the team is starting off with a manageable matchup at home, and that may be enough to provide an early spark.
As for Southern Utah, they were bitten by the proverbial injury bug last year and should look better in 2025-26 if all goes a little closer to plan in that regard. This will be the team’s last run in the WAC, as they’re set to jump in with the Big Sky next season. It’s a pretty versatile group this time, and we should see a lot of shuffling in the rotations during the course of the year. I like Southern Utah to take a step forward, but for now I don’t think they’ll cover in the opener.
