The Providence Friars and the Virginia Tech Hokies meet Saturday in college basketball action from Mohegan Sun Arena. Here’s a Providence vs Virginia Tech prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Providence vs Virginia Tech pick. We will examine the recent form and player performances for both teams, as well as the recent betting trends and streaks pertaining to this matchup. We’ll tie it all together with a summary that produces a favorable betting outcome for this game.

Providence Friars Betting Preview

The Friars squad of last season was a far cry from the heights of the 2023-24 run, when the team went 21-14 overall. Providence would end up going just 12-20 in the 2024-25 campaign, with a 6-14 run in the Big East games. That would put the Friars ahead of only Butler, DePaul and Seton Hall in the standings among the conference. Providence skidded into the postseason on a miserable 1-9 run, beating only Villanova on February 15 during that time. In the first round of the Big East Tournament, the Friars made an early exit with a six-point loss to Butler on March 12, ending their campaign for good.

Providence got off to a good start this year, taking on Holy Cross in the Monday opener. The Friars were up 44-27 by the end of the first half, then scored 45 more points (despite giving up 52 on the other side) in an 89-79 win. Topping the scorers was Stefan Vaaks with 19 points and two assists, while Jamier Jones had 16 points with five rebounds in 20 minutes of work during the victory. Both Jaylin Sellers and Corey Floyd had 12 points apiece while combining for five rebounds and five assists for the Friars as well.

Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview

Over on the Virginia Tech side, they also had a pretty rough season in 2024-25. The Hokies limped to a 13-19 overall record with an 8-12 run in a tricky ACC. That would put Virginia Tech tied with four other teams record-wise, and behind Duke, Louisville, Clemson, Wake Forest, North Carolina, SMU, Stanford, Georgia Tech and Virginia in the standings. The Hokies posted a spotty 3-6 run over their last nine games of the regular season and faced off against California in the first round of the ACC Tournament. After two overtime periods Virginia Tech left with an 82-73 loss on March 11 to finish off the year.

Virginia Tech played Charleston Southern in their opening game of the season. The Hokies had a rather modest 42-38 edge at the break, but then found their groove on a 56-29 run the rest of the way for a 98-67 win. Toibu Lawal was tops on 20 points with 12 rebounds in 29 minutes while Amani Hansberry also doubled up on 19 points with 13 rebounds. Jailen Bedford added 13 points with five rebounds in 18 minutes of work during the victory as well.

  • Providence has won the first half in three of its last four games against non-Conference opponents.

Providence vs Virginia Tech Prediction

I might take a stab on Providence here. I’m probably avoiding this one in reality, though. The Friars didn’t have the greatest second half in their season opener win over Holy Cross, but they got the job done sufficiently. Providence ended up shooting a nice 50 percent from the field with a 40-33 rebounding advantage and a 44-24 edge in the paint. The Friars weren’t spectacular from outside (7-of-26 for 26.9 percent) but it didn’t matter much in the double-digit win.

As for Virginia Tech, they had the opposite problem with a meandering first half that turned into a blowout with a surge after the break in their opener. The Hokies dominated up front with 49 rebounds and 42 points in the paint, so Providence is going to have to keep that shooting percentage up if they want to stay close (or win) in this matchup.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Providence Friars +1.5
