Oakland Golden Grizzlies Betting Preview

The Grizzlies opened up the season on a pretty spotty run, but they’ve been much better since early January. Oakland kicked things off on a 5-12 record, beating only Defiance, Toledo, Wright State, Loyola, and Milwaukee in that time. Wins over Northern Kentucky, IUPUI, Detroit, and Fort Wayne came next, then three losses in four games versus Robert Morris, Northern Kentucky, and Youngstown State (with a lone win over Green Bay). Since then it’s been a 5-2 run with wins over IUPUI, Detroit, Cleveland State, and Green Bay (twice). In total that gives the Grizzlies a 15-17 record across 32 games this season.

In the Tuesday tournament matchup versus Green Bay, Oakland powered out a 96-72 victory. The Grizzlies’ leading contributor was Allen Mukeba with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds in 26 minutes.

Milwaukee Panthers Betting Preview

Over on the Milwaukee side, they had a shaky November but since then it’s been pretty smooth sailing. The Panthers started at just 5-4 before wins over Cleveland State, Green Bay, Akron, North Central College, and IUPUI in succession. Losses to Oakland and Fort Wayne came in the next three games, then wins over Green Bay, Youngstown State, Wright State, Northern Kentucky, and IUPUI in the next eight. Since then it’s been a 5-4 run for the Panthers with a lone loss to Robert Morris. Otherwise, the wins have come courtesy of Wright State, Northern Kentucky, Youngstown State, Oakland, and Detroit. That gives the Panthers a 21-10 overall run across their first 31 outings of the year.

In the Detroit matchup back on Saturday, the Panthers jumped out to a 43-31 halftime edge. Milwaukee added another 46 points the rest of the way and cruised to the blowout home win 89-67. Kentrell Pullian led the team with 18 points, three rebounds, and three steals. Themus Fulks added 16 points with nine assists in 30 minutes, and Jamichael Stillwell came off the bench for a double-double on 16 points with 10 boards and three steals with three assists.

Why the Milwaukee Panthers will win

  • Milwaukee has won each of its last seven night games against the Horizon League.
  • Oakland has lost each of its last four games following a home win.
  • Oakland has lost the first half in five of its last six games against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Why the Oakland Golden Grizzlies will win

  • Oakland has won each of its last four Conference Tournament night games.

Matchup/League Facts

  • Milwaukee ranks 16th among Division 1 teams for rebounds per game this season (39.7).
  • Milwaukee ranks 20th among Division 1 teams for free throw attempts per game this season (23.5).

Oakland vs Milwaukee Prediction

I’ll lean toward the Panthers here. Milwaukee is coming off a fairly dominant win over a struggling Detroit team, posting a nice 52.4 percent from the field with 23 team assists and a whopping 33 points off 22 Titans turnovers. The Panthers did get out-rebounded 31-29 and missed eight of their 23 free throws (65.2 percent), however. That won’t help in tournament games, needless to say. Still, Milwaukee has won five of the last six games, with 84 or more points scored in four of those wins.

These teams have split the season series so far, with the home squad getting one each time. Oakland took it 65-49 in the January 2 matchup, and Milwaukee returned the favor in their own home victory on February 27 by a score of 71-66. The Panthers didn’t shoot well in that second game, hitting just 37.9 percent from the field and 15 percent (3-of-20) from 3-point range. The 30 points off 20 Grizzlies turnovers helped propel Milwaukee to the win, though. The Panthers won’t be able to rely on mistakes in game three, but if they get that shooting percentage up—and stay strong on the boards—I think Milwaukee will be okay.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Milwaukee Panthers -6
