Nicholls State Colonels Betting Preview
The Colonels were able to equal their 20 wins from the 2023-24 campaign last year, going 20-13 overall with a 13-7 run in the Southland Conference. Nicholls landed in third place among the standings with that effort, behind McNeese and Lamar. After breaking a four-game win streak with a loss to Lamar heading into the Southland Tournament, the Colonels took out Incarnate Word in the opening game. In the semifinals however, Nicholls took a loss 58-55 to Lamar on March 11 to finish off their campaign for good.
The Colonels had an unenviable road matchup versus Kentucky in their opener. That one went just about how you might expect: Nicholls was down 28-15 by the break and didn’t end up getting closer in a 77-51 blowout loss. Jalin Rice led the team with 13 points and two boards in 14 minutes, and Jalik Dunkley also reached double-digits with 10 points and four rebounds.
Eastern Illinois Panthers Betting Preview
Over on the Eastern Illinois side, they regressed a bit last season, failing to hit the 14-18 record from the previous campaign. The Panthers went 12-19 overall with a rough 8-12 run in the Ohio Valley Conference. That effort would put EIU ahead of only Western Illinois and Southern Indiana in the standings. The Panthers had a rocky finish to the season, posting a three-game win streak in January ahead of a four-game losing streak the next month. The good news is that Eastern Illinois finished off the year with four straight victories.
Eastern Illinois had a road matchup in their opener as well, theirs versus Valparaiso on Tuesday. In that matchup the Panthers were down 31-25 by the break. EIU made things interesting with a second-half advantage but still lost 66-63. Tops in scoring during the defeat was Preston Turner with 16 points and four rebounds. Zion Fruster added 12 points and six boards while Terry McMorris doubled up on 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Nicholls State vs Eastern Illinois Prediction
I’ll try Nicholls State here but I’m probably not touching it. The Colonels will have a much better barometer for their current condition in this matchup, as the opener versus Kentucky was a mismatch. Nicholls shot just 30.2 percent from the field, 16.7 percent (4-of-24) from outside and 15-of-22 (68.2 percent) from the line in that defeat, alongside a 41-27 rebounding deficit and a 21-9 disadvantage in team assists. Kentucky also blitzed the Colonels in the paint 42-20 in a pretty dominating effort.
As for Eastern Illinois, they played a pretty sloppy game versus Valparaiso with 19 turnovers and just 2-of-9 (22.2 percent) from 3-point range. The Panthers weren’t great from the field either (39.1 percent) but did have a 34-31 rebounding advantage and went 25-of-31 (80.6 percent) from the free throw line. This matchup should be a pretty good one if both teams play to their capabilities but in the end I like Nicholls State to power out the cover—provided they can shoot a lot better this time.
