Jackson State Tigers vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders Prediction
I’m on Texas Tech in this one. It’s a huge number, but this is just a mismatch of epic proportions and while it’s a new look Red Raiders team, this is still a situation where Grant McCasland has a history of blowing out inferior competition. The Red Raiders are no joke in these spots and I look for that to be the case once again as Texas Tech wins in a runaway.
Jackson State Tigers Recap
The Jackson State Tigers come into the 2026-27 season looking to leave 2025-26 in the rear view after going 12-21 overall including a 10-8 mark in SWAC conference play. The Tigers ran the gauntlet in the non-conference portion of their schedule, with the lone win coming agianst Louisiana on hte road but they played 5 top-25 teams. Jackson State would get the 7-seed in the SWAC tournament and would narrowly get by Grambling before falling to Florida A&M in the quarterfinals, ending their season. The shining star in Jackson State’s rotation is PG Daeshun Ruffin, who averaged 23.3 points per game with 5.3 assists per game last season while Dorian McMillian also returns as a junior after chipping in 11.9 points and 4.4 rebounds per game last season. Ruffin was a top-5 scorer nationally last season, and an injury waiver was able to salvage Jackson State’s hopes to have their leader back for this season as well as the second leading returning scorer in the SWAC in McMillian. Only time will tell if Jackson State can surge ahead to the peak of the SWAC and with former SWAC player of the year Trey Johnson taking over at head coach there’s plenty of optimism in Tiger country.

Why the Jackson State Tigers will win
- Texas Tech has lost four of its last five games.
- Jackson State has won three of its last four games.
- Jackson State has won the first half in five of its last six night games.
Texas Tech Red Raiders Recap
The Texas Tech Red Raiders come into the 2026-27 season looking to finally break through after what was a subpar season by Texas Tech’s standards under Grant McCasland. The Red Raiders finished the year at 23-11 overall, including a 12-6 mark in Big 12 conference play. Texas Tech had a signature win at MSG against Duke just before Christmas, but also dropped ranked matchups against Arkansas and Purdue, with the latter coming in the championship game of the Baha Mar MTE. Texas Tech would be swiftly bumped from the Big 12 tournament in the quarterfinals with a 75-53 loss to Iowa State. The Red Raiders would be a 5-seed at the NCAA tournament, knocking out 12-seed Akron before being blown out by Alabama in the second round. This is a really new Red Raiders team as the likes of Christian Anderson, LeJuan Watts and Donovan Atwell are all gone and the injury outlook for JT Toppin is still unclear which stinks as Toppin averaged 21.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per game last season. The Red Raiders hit the portal to bring in Cruz Davis from Hofstra after logging 20.1 points, 4.7 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game and Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn bolsters Texas Tech’s backcourt with 20.7 points and 3.1 rebounds per game last season with UNLV.
