The Fairfield Stags and the NJIT Highlanders meet Saturday in college basketball action from Wellness and Events Center. Here’s a Fairfield vs NJIT prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Fairfield vs NJIT pick. We will examine the recent form and player performances for both teams, as well as the recent betting trends and streaks pertaining to this matchup. We’ll tie it all together with a summary that produces a favorable betting outcome for this game.

Fairfield Stags Betting Preview

After a pretty nice overall run in the 2023-24 season that featured a 24-13 record and a trip to the conference championship game, Fairfield took a step backward last year. The team finished 12-20 overall with a sketchy 8-12 result in the MAAC games. That would leave the Stags ahead of only Saint Peter’s, Niagara and Canisius in the standings. Fairfield finished off the regular season with a 3-2 run featuring losses on the road to Sacred Heart and Siena. In the opening matchup of the MAAC Tournament, the Stags fell to Sacred Heart 71-58, ending their season for good on March 11.

This year the Stags have one game in the bag so far. Fairfield had a tricky road matchup versus Penn State, but held their own with a 37-37 tie at the half. The Stags were outpaced 39-31 from there however, and ended up losing 76-68. Topping the scorers in the futile effort was Braden Sparks with 25 points, four rebounds and two assists. Brandon Benjamin managed to double up with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Declan Wucherpfennig had nine points and seven rebounds in 31 minutes of work during the road defeat.

NJIT Highlanders Betting Preview

Over on the Highlanders’ side, they didn’t manage to reach the very reasonable depths of a 7-21 run in 2023-24 last season. NJIT went just 6-25 overall and 3-13 in America East matchups. That effort would put the Highlanders in the basement of the conference standings, two games behind UMBC. At the end of the regular season, NJIT lost to Bryant, Maine, New Hampshire, Bryant again, Binghamton, UMBC, Vermont and Albany before finally getting a road victory over Binghamton. That was the last game of the season for the Highlanders however, as they didn’t qualify for the conference tournament.

This year NJIT opened up their season versus Fordham on Tuesday. The Highlanders were able to notch a 37-26 halftime edge and held that margin during the second half for a 72-61 win in the end. Leading the team scorers was David Bolden with 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Rocco Awad had 12 points with two boards, while Jordan Rogers also reached double-digits with 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists in the winning road effort.

Fairfield vs NJIT Prediction

I’ll probably just stick with Fairfield. This one should be a pretty intriguing matchup though; it’ll go a long way in showing us what each team is going to look like in the early-going this year. In any case, the Stags were able to hold their own—at least initially—in a tricky road matchup versus Penn State in their opener. Fairfield ended up shooting just 38.6 percent from the field and 18.2 percent (6-of-33) from 3-point range though, which is what really buried them. Otherwise the Stags were competitive on the boards (38-34) and in the paint (42-38) despite the deficits.

As for NJIT, they got a nice well-rounded effort in their victory on the road over a cold-shooting (34.3 percent) Fordham team in their opener. The Highlanders hit a scorching 54.5 percent (12-of-22) from 3-point range to drive the win. It was a good sign for a potential improvement this year for NJIT, but we’ve still got a long, long way to go.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Fairfield Stags -5.5
