Detroit Titans Betting Preview
The Titans were able to notch a middling .500 run through their first 10 games of the 2024-25 season, but since then they’ve hit the skids. Detroit took out Cleary University, Niagara, Ball State, Eastern Michigan, and Fort Wayne during that opening stretch, falling otherwise to Loyola Chicago, Toledo, Wake Forest, Tulsa, and Rhode Island. Since then Detroit has been mired in a 1-9 slump over their last 10 outings. The lone win came over Robert Morris. Otherwise, it was losses to Wright State, Davidson, Northern Kentucky, Wisconsin, Youngstown State, Milwaukee, IUPUI, Fort Wayne, and Oakland during that time, resulting in a rough 6-14 overall stretch through the first 20 games of the season for the Titans.
In their last outing versus Oakland over the weekend, the Titans were looking at a 34-26 deficit by the end of the first half, Detroit got slightly better from there but couldn’t make up the gap on a 33-31 run during a 65-59 loss. Leading team scorer Nate Johnson put up 16 points with five rebounds, two assists, and two steals in the defeat. Ryan Kalambay doubled up on 13 points with 11 boards, one steal, one assist, and one block in 31 minutes, while Grand Gondrezick chipped in 11 points with four boards and three steals.
Cleveland State Vikings Betting Preview
Over on the Vikings’ side, they conversely had a rough opening run over their first 10 games but have been on a great stretch since early December. Cleveland State went just 4-6 in those first 10, beating Baldwin Wallace, Valparaiso, Eastern Michigan, and NJIT among losses otherwise versus Michigan, Kansas State, Minnesota, Kent State, Morehead State, and Milwaukee in that time. The Vikings have hit a nice 10-game win streak since then. Those victories have come versus Green Bay, Brescia, Oakland, Midway University, Wright State, IUPUI, Robert Morris, Youngstown State, Northern Kentucky, and IUPUI again for a 14-6 overall record so far this year.
In their rematch on the road versus IUPUI on Sunday, the Vikings came out of halftime with a 33-31 deficit. Cleveland State found their groove after the break on a 42-29 stretch and eventually won in comeback fashion 73-62. Tevin Smith was the team’s high scorer with 16 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Dylan Arnett added 13 points with eight rebounds and two assists, while KJ Debrick came off the bench for 13 points and two rebounds in 10 minutes of work on the floor.
Why the Cleveland State Vikings will win
- Detroit Mercy has lost each of its last 16 road games against Conference opponents.
- Cleveland State has won each of its last 10 games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
- Cleveland State has won the first half in each of its last six games against the Horizon League at Wolstein Center.
Detroit vs Cleveland State Prediction
I’ll lean toward Cleveland State. The Vikings didn’t start out particularly well in their latest win over IUPUI but to their credit finished strong. Cleveland State ended up shooting a nice 47.3 percent in that one with 16-of-19 (84.2 percent) from the line. The 32-27 rebounding deficit and 11 turnovers were offset by 37.8 percent shooting allowed on the other side. That makes 73 or more points in nine of 10 games during this current win streak (67 in the outlier).
As for Detroit, they shot a meager 37.5 percent from the floor in their latest loss to Oakland and had a 35-28 disadvantage on the boards. The Titans haven’t cracked 67 points in four straight games, so Cleveland State shouldn’t have too many issues keeping Detroit honest on the scoreboard here.
