Duquesne Dukes Betting Preview

Duquesne had a nice run going back in December/January but outside of that, it’s been a pretty tough year for the team. The Dukes lost eight of their first 10 outings, taking wins over only Old Dominion and Delaware during that time. A nice 7-1 run came next with a lone loss to Davidson amid wins over Towson, UC Irvine, Cleary, Rhode Island, St. Joseph’s, George Washington, and St. Bonaventure. Since then it’s been a rough 2-7 stretch, though. Those wins were over Loyola and Fordham. Otherwise, it’s been losses to Dayton, Fordham, Saint Joseph’s, UMass, Richmond, Dayton, and St. Bonaventure in that time, giving the Dukes a rocky 11-16 overall run through their first 27 games of the year.

In Saturday’s matchup with St. Bonaventure, the Dukes were down by nine points at halftime. Duquesne got better from there on a 33-31 run but couldn’t get any closer on a 70-63 defeat on the road. Leading scorer Tre Dinkins put up 15 points with three boards and one assist. Cam Crawford added 12 points with four rebounds, and Matus Hronsky chipped in with 11 points, six rebounds, and one assist in 36 minutes of work.

La Salle Explorers Betting Preview

Over on the La Salle side, they’ve been unable to put together more than two consecutive wins since way back in mid-November. The Explorers kicked things off on a pretty spotty 8-5 run, taking losses to UC San Diego, UIC, Northeastern, Saint Joseph’s, and North Carolina during that time. La Salle went 4-2 in the next six games with wins over Fairleigh Dickinson, Immaculata, St. Bonaventure, and Davidson. The Explorers have won just two games over Rhode Island and George Washington since then. Otherwise, it’s been losses to UMass, Saint Louis, Fordham, VCU, UMass, Saint Joseph’s, Rhode Island, and Richmond in succession. That gives the Explorers a 12-15 record through 27 games this year so far.

Matched up against Richmond last Wednesday, the Explorers came out of halftime with a 35-30 edge. La Salle was outscored 33-23 the rest of the way however, resulting in a 63-58 home loss in the end. Deuce Jones led the team with 16 points, seven assists, and three rebounds, while Mac Etienne had 14 points with six boards and two assists. Jahlil White doubled up on 10 points with 13 rebounds and four assists as well.

Why the La Salle Explorers will win

  • The home team has won each of Duquesne’s last five games.
  • Duquesne has lost each of its last five road games against the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Why the Duquesne Dukes will win

  • La Salle has lost eight of its last nine night games against Conference opponents.
  • Duquesne has won the first half in 15 of its last 20 games against Conference opponents.

Duquesne vs La Salle Prediction

I’ll lean toward Duquesne. Probably not touching this one though, as there’s not a lot to get excited about here with both teams struggling. In any case, the Dukes need a good effort here following a rough showing on offense versus St. Bonaventure. Duquesne shot just 36.4 percent from the field in that one while giving up 50 percent to the Bonnies on the other side. The good news is that Duquesne did on the boards by a pretty wide margin 39-24 (13-2 offensive). In their previous four games (a 2-2 run), the Dukes had managed to score 68 or more points in each outing. I’d like to see some better shooting here as Duquesne surpasses the 70-point mark on the way to a win/cover in this one, but I’m probably staying away in reality.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Duquesne Dukes -1.5
