Sam Houston State Bearkats Betting Preview

The Bearkats didn’t start out too badly this year, but they’ve since fallen far below the .500 mark. Sam Houston went 7-6 over their first 13 games, taking out Tarleton State, Lamar, Trinity TX, Colgate, Texas Southern, St. Thomas TX, and Dallas along the way. A rough 1-10 stretch came next as Sam Houston beat FIU among losses to New Mexico State, UTEP, Liberty, Kennesaw State, Jacksonville State, Middle Tennessee, Western Kentucky, Louisiana Tech, FIU, and Liberty in that time. Wins thankfully came in the next two games though, as Sam Houston took out Jacksonville State and Kennesaw State for a 10-16 record through 26 games. 

On Thursday versus Western Kentucky, the Bearkats held a dominant 43-25 halftime edge. Sam Houston scored another 35 points after the break and powered out the win 78-62 on the road. Leading the team in the victory was Lamar Wilkerson, who doubled up on 14 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists. 

Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders Betting Preview

Over on the Middle Tennessee side, they’ve had a couple of choppy runs in the books so far but overall they’re doing pretty well. The Blue Raiders went 10-5 over their first 15 games. The wins in that time came versus Oglethorpe, Abilene Christian, Evansville, Ohio, South Florida, UAB, Rhodes, Cal Baptist, Lipscomb, and Florida International. After wins over Kennesaw State, Jacksonville State, Western Kentucky, and Sam Houston in the next four, Middle Tennessee hit a 1-3 skid with a lone win over UTEP among losses to LA Tech, New Mexico State, and Jacksonville State. Wins over Kennesaw State and Western Kentucky came in the next pair. That would give the Blue Raiders a 17-8 record across their first 25 games. 

Matched up against Louisiana Tech on Thursday, the Raiders faced a six-point deficit at the break. Middle Tennessee was outscored 46-41 the rest of the way and stumbled to an 85-74 loss. Leading the team in scoring during the losing effort was Jestin Porter with 16 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Jlynn Counter added 12 points with three boards and three assists, while Camryn Weston came off the bench for 12 points, two rebounds, and three assists.

Sam Houston vs Middle Tennessee Prediction 

I’ll lean toward Middle Tennessee. The Raiders need a good bounce-back effort here following their home loss to Louisiana Tech on Thursday, though. Middle Tennessee shot well (45.3 percent) in that one but got out-rebounded slightly 37-32 and coughed up 11 turnovers for 12 Bulldogs points. The Raiders are on a rocky 3-4 skid right now, but they’re still scoring well with 74 or more points in three straight outings. 

These teams met up back on January 23 in a tight 77-75 road win for Middle Tennessee. The Raiders shot well (47.4 percent) in that one but didn’t hit the glass very hard on a 37-29 rebounding deficit. Middle Tennessee was careful with the ball though, notching just six total turnovers in the victory. The Raiders have been playing pretty well overall lately and I like them to get back to business on Saturday.
