Marshall Thundering Herd Betting Preview
The Herd have had a pretty spotty year in the books so far, but they’ve been able to keep their heads above the .500 mark overall. Marshall opened on a 7-5 run through their first 12 outings. The wins in that time came courtesy of Davis & Elkins, Southern Indiana, Bellarmine, South Carolina State, Morehead State, Ohio, and West Virginia Wesleyan. A 3-4 run came next with losses to Southern Miss, Elon, Troy, and James Madison among wins over Texas State, James Madison, and Georgia Southern. Marshall would go 5-3 over the next eight with wins over Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Coastal Carolina, and Arkansas State among losses to Georgia State, South Alabama, and Louisiana otherwise. That gave the Herd a 15-12 overall record through their first 27 games this year.Â
In their Thursday game versus Old Dominion, Marshall jumped out to a 41-26 halftime edge and ended up powering out the 81-77 victory in the end. Obinna Anochili-Killen led the team with 24 points with four rebounds, four blocks, and three assists.Â
Appalachian State Mountaineers Betting Preview
Over on the App State side, they weren’t looking so good coming into the 2025 calendar year but they’ve been much better since early January. The Mountaineers went just 6-7 in their first 13 games, taking losses to Miami Ohio, Wisconsin, UNC Wilmington, High Point, Louisiana, North Texas, and Troy. After beating Texas State, Coastal Carolina, James Madison (twice), and Old Dominion in the next five, App State lost to Arkansas State and Old Dominion around a win over LA Monroe. Following wins over Georgia State, Southern Miss, Ohio, and Coastal Carolina, the Mountaineers took a loss to Georgia State which dropped them to 16-10 overall.Â
Matched up against Georgia Southern in their Thursday outing, the Mountaineers held a 40-35 edge going into the second half. App State gave it up in the second but eventually won 79-74 in overtime. Leading scorer Myles Tate put up 26 points with seven boards and five assists with one steal. CJ Huntley managed to double up on 25 points with 10 rebounds, and Jalil Beaubrun chipped in 11 points with eight rebounds in 25 minutes of work.Â

Marshall vs Appalachian State PredictionÂ
I’m going to lean toward App State. The Mountaineers had a bit of trouble escaping a middling Georgia Southern team in their last outing, however, so they’ll need to be sharper here. Appalachian State shot 42.2 percent from the field in that overtime victory and missed 12 of their 31 free throws (61.3 percent). The 11 turnovers didn’t help matters, but App State did hold the Eagles to just 38 percent shooting overall defensively. That makes five wins in the last six games for the Mountaineers, with 72 or more points in three of those five.Â
As for Marshall, they’re coming off a tight win on the road versus Old Dominion. The Herd shot an excellent 60.4 percent from the field in that one and had a 34-30 rebounding edge but also coughed up 17 turnovers for 11 Monarchs points. If Marshall can’t control their mistakes on Saturday they won’t have much of a chance.Â
