Southern Utah Thunderbirds Betting Preview

The Thunderbirds started out on a pretty solid run, but they’ve struggled since early December. Southern Utah hit an 8-2 run in their first 10 outings of the season, falling to only Loyola Chicago and UCLA in that time. A losing streak versus Arizona, New Mexico State, UTRGV, Northern Arizona, Grand Canyon, and Tarleton State came next before a win over Texas Arlington. Since then it’s been a 2-7 run with wins over Cal Baptist and Utah Tech among losses to Seattle U, Grand Canyon, Cal Baptist, Texas Arlington, Tarleton State, Abilene Christian, and Utah Valley. That gives the Thunderbirds an 11-15 overall run this year so far. 

In the Utah Valley matchup on Saturday, the Thunderbirds held a 33-32 edge by the break. Southern Utah was outscored the rest of the way 38-35 though, resulting in a 70-68 defeat in the end. Dominique Ford was the team’s leading scorer with 28 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Tavi Jackson added 16 points with two rebounds and one steal. Jamir Simpson chipped in with nine points, seven rebounds, and five assists as well. 

Abilene Christian Wildcats Betting Preview

Over on the Abilene Christian side, they’ve had a pretty choppy year but to their credit, they’ve been doing better lately. The Wildcats hit an 8-5 opening run with losses to Middle Tennessee, Kennesaw State, Montana State, Baylor, and East Texas A&M during that time. Abilene Christian would hit the skids on a 1-8 run from there, beating only Tarleton State among losses to Texas A&M, Stephen F Austin, Utah Valley, Seattle U, Grand Canyon, Cal Baptist, TX Arlington, and Cal Baptist again. Since then however, it’s been wins over Utah Tech, Southern Utah, and Seattle U, giving the Wildcats an overall record of 12-13 through 25 games so far. 

Matched up against Seattle U in the home rematch last Thursday, Abilene Christian was up 40-26 by halftime. The Wildcats kept it up with a 35-33 advantage from there and took the win 75-59 in the end. Quion Williams paced the team with 16 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and four steals. Bradyn Hubbard had 12 points with five rebounds and four assists, while Rich Smith chipped in 10 points with four rebounds and four assists. 

Southern Utah vs Abilene Christian Prediction 

I’ll stick with the Wildcats. Abilene Christian is coming off a pretty solid win over a middling Seattle U team, hitting 47.2 percent from the field with 36 rebounds in a double-digit result. The Wildcats did have 15 turnovers (for nine Redhawks points) but so did Seattle U. That makes three straight wins for the Wildcats, with 75 or more points in each and two of them coming on the road. 

One of those road wins was over Southern Utah on February 8 by a score of 84-70. The Wildcats posted a nice 55.4 percent shooting from the field and scored 23 points off 22 turnovers. That said, Abilene Christian also got blitzed on the board 41-24. Provided the Wildcats can hit the glass better in this home rematch they should be fine.
