NJIT Highlanders Betting Preview

It’s been a rough season for the Highlanders. They’re yet to win consecutive games. NJIT fell to Penn, Villanova, Loyola MD, Morgan State, George Washington, Bucknell, and Cleveland State in their first seven games, then hit a 2-2 run with losses to UMass and Seton Hall. Another rough stretch 3-9 came over the next dozen games for the Highlanders. Those losses were versus Delaware State, Wagner, Washington, UMBC, UMass Lowell, Maine, Vermont, Albany, and Bryant, giving NJIT an overall record of 5-18 through their first 23 games of the year.

In the Maine matchup on Thursday, the Highlanders went into the break with a 41-35 deficit. NJIT hit a 39-37 advantage the rest of the way, but couldn’t make the comeback in a 78-74 loss. Leading the team in scoring was Sebastian Robinson with 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. John Kelly came off the bench for 10 points with five rebounds in 17 minutes of work as well.

New Hampshire Wildcats Betting Preview

Over on the New Hampshire side, they’ve had a tough run this year as well, with only one instance of consecutive wins in the books. The Wildcats lost to UMass, UConn, Fairfield, Brown, Sacred Heart, and Holy Cross in the first eight games. A losing streak versus Marist, Columbia, Fordham, Dartmouth, Harvard, Stonehill, Iowa, Vermont, and Albany came next, then wins over Binghamton and UMBC. The next four were all losses though, as New Hampshire fell versus NJIT, Bryant, UMass Lowell, and Maine for a 4-19 stretch through 23 games.

Matched up against UMBC in their Thursday outing, the Wildcats were behind by six points as the second half began. New Hampshire hit a 40-33 run the rest of the way, however and ended up taking the comeback victory 79-78 in the end. Sami Pissis led the team on 27 points with two boards and one assist. Khalil Badru added 21 points with five rebounds and one steal, while Anthony McComb had 18 points with four boards off the bench.

Why the New Hampshire Wildcats will win

  • NJIT has lost each of its last nine road games against Conference opponents.
  • New Hampshire has won five of its last six games against NJIT.

Why the NJIT Highlanders will win

  • New Hampshire has lost 10 of its last 11 day games against non-AP-ranked opponents.

NJIT vs New Hampshire Prediction

I’ll lean toward NJIT here, but there’s not a lot to get excited about here in a matchup between two struggling teams. On Thursday the Highlanders did well on the boards with a 35-29 advantage over Maine, but they also gave up 11 turnovers for 19 Bears points and surrendered 47.1 percent shooting on the other side. NJIT has scored well over their last three games with 70 or more in each, but they’ve lost two of that trio. The Highlanders have also given up a combined 170 points in their last pair as well. Considering New Hampshire has scored 76 or more points in three of the last four games, that sort of permissive defense could spell trouble for the Highlanders on Saturday.

These teams saw each other on January 18 in a home win 64-59 for NJIT. The Highlanders shot slightly better (40.4 percent to 37.3 percent), rebounded slightly better (38-37), and had 11 turnovers (as did New Hampshire) in a pretty close matchup. Neither team was good from the line or 3-point range, either. This rematch should at least be competitive; otherwise, it’s probably not worth messing with.

Andrew Jett's Pick: NJIT Highlanders +1
