Montana State Bobcats Betting Preview
Montana State had a wild campaign in 2023-24. The Bobcats went just 17-18 overall and 9-9 in Big Sky play, but managed to power their way through the conference tournament for a berth in the Big Dance. Montana State would fall in the First Four to Grambling State in OT, though.
This year Montana State gets back head coach Matt Logie in his second season. He’s got seven returnees this season, and 12 of the 13 scholarship players are juniors or seniors. That will make for an experienced roster that—with some luck—could contend for the Big Sky championship again. Montana State will meet Wichita State, Denver, Northwestern, and Southern Miss after this game.
Wisconsin Badgers Betting Preview
Over on the Wisconsin side, they powered out a 22-14 overall record last year with an 11-9 run in a tough Big Ten. The Badgers landed in fifth place in the standings with that result. Wisconsin would eventually lose to James Madison in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament to finish off their campaign.
The Badgers have one game in the books so far this year. Wisconsin took on Holy Cross Monday, posting 50 second-half points in an 85-61 win. John Tonje led the team with 23 points, while John Blackwell added 16 points and four boards in 30 minutes of work.
Why the Wisconsin Badgers will win
- Wisconsin has won each of its last 15 night games at Kohl Center against non-AP-ranked opponents.
- Montana State has lost each of its last three road games against non-conference opponents.
Why the Montana State Bobcats will win
- Montana State has won five of its last six night games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
Montana State vs Wisconsin Prediction
I might take a stab at Montana State. The Bobcats enter this season with high hopes after their late run a year ago. Montana State has several key players returning from that team, including senior starters Tyler Patterson (8.2 PPG) and Brian Goracke (13.5 PPG). If the chemistry is there right off the bat, I can see the Bobcats contending here.
As for Wisconsin, they’re coming off a dominant win versus an outmatched Holy Cross team. The Badgers posted a 38-21 rebounding edge in that one and hit all 16 of their free throw attempts. Wisconsin will serve as a tough test for the Bobcats right out of the gate, but I think Montana State can keep a cover pace.
