Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview

The Hokies started out the year on a rough run, losing to South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Old Dominion in their first trio of outings. Virginia Tech would beat Wofford and NC State ahead of two more losses to Wake Forest and Georgia Tech. Since their last win over Cal (in double-overtime) the Hokies have lost to Louisville, Florida State and Miami. That gives Virginia Tech a 3-8 run over the first 11 outings of the season.

In the Miami game last weekend, the Hokies were in trouble by halftime with a 20-3 deficit. Virginia Tech kept the pace from there on a 34-17 loss. Kyron Drones was 12-of-21 for 124 yards, and Marcellous Hawkins added eight carries for 72 yards. Tops in receiving was Ayden Greene with five catches for 95 yards in the winning effort.

Virginia Cavaliers Betting Preview

Over on the Virginia side, they’ve done markedly better this year in the record column. The Cavs beat Coastal Carolina in their opener before a loss to NC State, then hit a win streak. Those victories came versus William & Mary, Stanford, Florida State, Louisville, Washington State, North Carolina and Cal in the next seven outings. After a loss to Wake Forest, Virginia bounced back with a win over Duke last weekend for a 9-2 overall run thus far.

Matched up against Duke back on November 15, the Cavaliers were up 17-3 by halftime. Virginia ended up scoring in every quarter during a 34-17 win. QB Chandler Morris was 23-of-35 for 316 yards, two scores and two picks. J’Mari Taylor led the rush with 133 yards and two scores off 18 carries, and Trell Harris had eight catches for 161 yards and a TD.

Virginia Tech vs Virginia Prediction

I’ll go with Virginia. The Cavaliers have had plenty of time to rest and prepare for this matchup. Back on November 15 in the Duke game, Virginia posted 540 yards, 224 rush yards, 7.0 yards per play, 22 first downs and 12-of-19 on third downs. The only blemish was the two interceptions. Defensively Virginia gave up just 255 yards with 11 first downs on the other side. The Cavaliers have notched 31 or more points in two of the last three games, with the outlier being the 16-9 loss to Wake Forest.

As for Virginia Tech, they went just 3-of-12 on third downs in their loss to Miami but didn’t play terribly on offense otherwise. The Hokies D gave up 418 yards, 335 pass yards, 6.6 yards per play and 7-of-13 on third downs, though. That gives Virginia Tech fewer than 18 points in three straight games—all losses. This will be another tough matchup for the Hokies.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Virginia Cavaliers -10.5
