The UAB Blazers and the Illinois Fighting Illini meet in week 1 college football action from Gies Memorial Stadium on Thursday. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best bets for this game. Here’s a UAB Blazers vs. Illinois Fighting Illini Prediction.

UAB Blazers Team Preview

The UAB Blazers come into the 2026 season looking to bounce back from their 4-8 record in 2025, including a 2-6 mark in AAC play, but the Blazers did look improved under Alex Mortensen, who now takes over the reins for his first full season as the Blazers’ head coach. Ryder Burton takes over the QB1 duties after Jalen Kitna moved on, but Burton did throw for 7 TDs and 5 interceptions last season. Rod Robinson comes in from Georgia and Ja’Vin Simpkins come in from Coastal Carolina to help this Blazers running back room alongside Bam McReynolds who transfers over from ULM. On defense, Marlin Dean comes in from Georgia State to really help this UAB pass rush, while Sterling Sanders and Nigel Tate will anchor the defensive line.

Illinois Fighting Illini Team Preview

The Illinois Fighting Illini will try to keep their foot on the gas in 2026 after going 9-4 in 2025, including a 5-4 mark in Big Ten conference play while posting a 30-28 win over the Tennessee Volunteers in the Music City Bowl. Katin Houser takes over QB1 duties for Illinois after emerging at East Carolina over the last two years with 37 touchdowns and 17 interceptions over that timespan. Ca’Lil Valentine returns after logging a team-high 614 rushing yards while Hudson Clement’s also back after posting 87 catches for 1,195 yards and 8 touchdowns over the last two years. On defense, the Fighting Illini’s secondary should be a strength with the return of Xavier Scott and Matthew Bailey along with Juice Clarke.

UAB Blazers vs. Illinois Fighting Illini Prediction

I’m on the Illini here. It’s a huge number, but this UAB team isn’t very good and while Alex Mortensen is a coach that the players bought into last year, there’s just a talent mismatch here and the Illini have shown some improvement with the addition of Houser. I think Houser could have a ceiling once we hit Big Ten play, but in this matchup I think the Illini start strong so give me Illinois.

Chris Ruffolo's Pick: Illinois -27.5
