The Owls kicked off the 2025 campaign with a couple of sizable wins, demolishing UMass and Howard in the first two games. Temple was then blown out by Oklahoma and Georgia Tech in the next pair before a tight win over UTSA. Game six was another loss, this time versus Navy. In the home defeat Temple was outscored 25-14 in the second half on the way to a 32-31 result. The Owls posted 518 yards with 345 pass yards, 6.8 yards per play and 27 first downs. The defense gave up 243 rushing yards and 7.1 yards per play on the other side.
In Saturday’s matchup versus Charlotte, the Owls started the first quarter on a modest clip then scored 42 points across the next two quarters in an eventual 49-14 blowout win on the road. QB Evan Simon threw for 194 yards and three scores on 15-of-22, while Jay Ducker led the rush with nine totes for 114 yards and a touchdown of his own. Leading the receivers was Kajiya Hollawayne with five catches for 85 yards and a TD in the victory.
Over on the Golden Hurricane’s side, they opened up with a blowout win of their own, taking out Abilene Christian 35-7 in game one. The next pair were losses versus New Mexico State and Navy, then came a win over Oklahoma State. Tulsa would then fall versus Tulane and Memphis from there. In the Memphis game, the Hurricane were only able to muster 246 total yards, 71 rush yards, 4.2 yards per play, 15 first downs and 4-of-14 on third-down conversion attempts alongside four turnovers in a rough 45-7 road defeat.
Matched up against East Carolina last Thursday, the Hurricane suffered another double-digit road loss. Tulsa was down 24-14 by the end of the first half and gave up points in every quarter along the way to a 41-27 result. QB Baylor Hayes was 23-of-41 for 251 yards and two touchdowns, while Dominic Richardson carried 17 times for a team-high 59 rush yards. Brody Foley caught six balls for 126 yards and a TD as the team’s leading receiver. Zion Booker nabbed a touchdown as well among his nine grabs for 55 yards.
Heading into Week 9, Elijah Green leads the league for interceptions (5) this season.
Heading into Week 9, JoJo Bermudez leads Temple for receptions (24) this season.
Tulsa ranks T122nd among FBS teams for 1st downs against this season (159).
Tulsa ranks T121st among FBS teams for Q2 points per game this season (4.7).
Temple ranks 127th among FBS teams for Q1 opponent points per game this season (9.0).
Temple ranks T15th among FBS teams for Q2 opponent points per game this season (4.4).
I’ll probably just stay with Temple. The Owls defense did a good job with Charlotte last weekend, giving up just 158 pas yards, 21 first downs and 6-of-16 on third-down tries along with three takeaways. The offense wasn’t great on third downs themselves (2-of-9) but did more than enough to win. That makes 24 or more points scored in four straight games.
As for Tulsa, they couldn’t keep up with East Carolina in their last outing. The Hurricane ended up surrendering 568 total yards—268 of those being on the ground—27 first downs and 9-of-18 on third-down tries. The offense wasn’t terrible, but the 6-of-19 on third downs wasn’t nearly enough. Tulsa has been below 24 points in five of the last six games (a 1-5 stretch), so it’d be nice to see the offense get going here.
