New Mexico Lobos Betting Preview
The Lobos didn’t fare too well in head coach Bronco Mendenhall’s first (and only) season at the helm in 2024. New Mexico limped to a 5-7 overall run and a 3-4 mark in Mountain West games, giving the team an eighth-place finish ahead of Utah State, San Diego State, Wyoming and Nevada. After an ugly 0-4 start against some tricky competition, the Lobos did win five out of seven contests toward the middle of the season but missed out on their sixth victory with a road loss to Hawaii on November 30.
With Mendenhall out of the picture, New Mexico will be under the tutelage of first-year head coach Jason Eck. He’ll be joined by new offensive coordinator Luke Schluesner as the team attempts to rebuild themselves into a contender. It won’t be easy in the early-going; the Lobos have four road games in their first six outings. The good news is the team has some solid building blocks on paper for new OC Eck. Ex-Montana State RB Scottre Humphrey should mesh well with Damon Bankston and the gang. The bad news for the offense is on the line, as the team only returns one starter.
Michigan Wolverines Betting Preview
Over on the Michigan side, they fought pretty valiantly among a very tough and very crowded Big Ten Conference last year and got a bowl win as a reward. The Wolverines landed at 8-5 overall with a 5-4 Big Ten run, which put them behind Oregon, Penn State, Indiana, Ohio State, Illinois and Iowa in the standings. All of those teams—with the exception of Iowa—were nationally ranked by season’s end. Four of Michigan’s five losses came to ranked teams in fact, and they would take out a pair in the final two games. The Wolverines beat Ohio State on November 30 to close out the regular season, then dispatched Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl to finish it all off.
Sherrone Moore is back for his second year at the helm, but he’ll have a new offensive coordinator at his side in Chip Lindsey. Don Martindale is back to run the defense in his second year. The team boasts a highly-touted freshman QB in Bryce Underwood, as well as a consistent running game and a stout defense. The potential for a playoff slot is there if all goes well for Michigan in 2025.

New Mexico vs Michigan Prediction
I’ll lean toward Michigan in this one. It’s admittedly a boring pick, but if the Wolverines are going to make some noise in the Big Ten (and nationally) this season then they’ve got to come out swinging in this opener. That includes finding a downfield passing attack, which was one of the few weak spots for Michigan last year—they averaged just 5.4 yards per pass. Outside of that, it seems that the Wolverines will come into the season strong. They were able to fill their transfer holes quite well, pulling Clemson DT Tre Williams and Alabama RB Justice Haynes.
Nine wins is certainly a feasible number for Michigan this season, and if the team gets cooking who knows what they could accomplish. There’s a big game looming versus Ohio State, but it’ll be in Ann Arbor. All things considered, Michigan will be one of the most fun teams to follow in 2025.
