Georgia Southern Eagles Betting Preview
Georgia Southern didn’t have too bad of a season in 2024—even though they missed out on the East Division crown and lost their final game. The Eagles ended up 8-5 overall with a 6-2 run in the Sun Belt, putting the team in second place among the East behind Marshall. Georgia Southern managed to win three of their final four games and earned a berth in the New Orleans Bowl. The Eagles fell in that bowl game 31-26 versus Sam Houston, though.
Moving on to the 2025 campaign, Georgia Southern will have Clay Helton back for his fourth season as head coach. The coordinators are the same as well: Ryan Aplin on offense and Brandon Bailey for the defensive side. In the preseason coaches’ poll, the Eagles were picked to finish second in the Sun Belt’s East Division once again. JC French is set to retake the starting quarterback role, which marks the first time in Helton’s stint that the team returns the starter at that position. French is coming off a 65.6 percent mark on completions, over 2,800 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Fresno State Bulldogs Betting Preview
Over on the Bulldogs’ side, they had something of a middling campaign in 2024 and it ended on a down note as well. Fresno State went 6-7 overall with a 4-3 result in Mountain West games. That effort would put the Bulldogs in fourth place among the standings behind Boise State, UNLV and Colorado State. Fresno State started at 3-1 then lost five of their final eight games. In the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, the Bulldogs took a double-overtime loss 28-20 versus Northern Illinois On December 23.
Fresno State has one game under their collective belt already, playing last Saturday versus Kansas. The Bulldogs were only behind by a touchdown after the first quarter, but didn’t score after that. Fresno State eventually took a loss 31-7 in blowout fashion. EJ Warner threw for 179 yards and a pair of picks on 18-of-29 passing, and Bryson Donelson led the rush with 11 totes for 34 yards. Leading the receivers was Josiah Freeman with 43 yards on three catches.

Georgia Southern vs Fresno State Prediction
I’m going to stay with Fresno State. Last weekend the Bulldogs had the unenviable task of facing Kansas in a road matchup during their opener, and things went pretty much how you’d expect them to go. Fresno State logged just 216 total yards (179 passing), 3.7 yards per play and 13 first downs while coughing up three turnovers (two picks). On the other side the defense wasn’t downright terrible outside of 207 rushing yards and 22 first downs given up. Fresno State was at least stout on third downs (2-of-10 allowed).
As for Georgia Southern, the stage is set to at least equal last year’s second-place finish in the division. That said, the Eagles certainly want something more. The pieces are certainly there to make an immediate impact on offense, as French will be joined by last year’s No. 2 rusher OJ Arnold. The 17 incoming transfers may take a while to get acclimated however, so I’m leaning toward the Bulldogs cover-wise here.
