Yulia Putintseva was sensational in her opening match of the 2024 Ningbo Open. She trounced Caroline Dolehide 6-2, 6-0 to register her 38th win of the season. The most remarkable thing about the match was that the Kazakhstani lost the first two games but did not drop any after that, as she reeeled off 12 straight games for the victory. 

The 29-year-old landed 79% first serves and won 74% first serve points (25/34). She won 22% of second-serve points (2/9) and converted six of 13 break points. If she defeats Ella Seidel to reach the last eight, Putintseva will have achieved her best result of this year’s Asian swing.

Ella Seidel was supposed to face Yafan Wang, but the Chinese player withdrew just hours before the match because of illness. Her replacement was Kathinka Von Deichmann, who, like Seidel, entered the tournament as a lucky loser.

But it was Seidel who dominated the match with her superior serving and assured baseline game. She hammered four aces and landed 68% of first serves. The 19-year-old won 74% of first serve points (31/42) and 40% of second-serve points (8/20). Seidel converted five of 11 break points and saved five of six break points on her own serve.

Putintseva watched Seidel for a bit in the stands during her opening match on Tuesday when she had a day off. She hasn’t seen a lot of the German before, but will be wary of the threat she possesses when given time and space. Thankfully for Putintseva, she’s got bags of experience. And Seidel, who has faced a handful of Top 100 players this season, just couldn’t quite manufacture an upset. It doesn’t look she will do so in Ningbo as Putintseva was in complete command of her opener too.
