Iga Swiatek delivered a statement win over Madison Keys in the first match of the tournament. Swiatek raced past the Australian Open champion Keys in straight sets in under an hour and ensured she led their 2025 head-to-head, having lost to the American in Melbourne.

Swiatek won the first set 6-1 in 23 minutes as Keys was playing in her first match since the US Open. Swiatek did experience a slight wobble early in the second set when she dropped her serve and Keys got on the board twice in the set, but the Pole won routinely in the end 6-2.

Swiatek hit 2 aces and 3 double faults in the victory. She landed 62% of first serves in play and won 82% of first serve points (23/28). Swiatek won 53% of second serve points (9/17) and saved three of four break points.

Elena Rybakina, meanwhile, took control of the second group match as the former Wimbledon champion blitzed WTA Finals debutant Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 6-1 in 58 minutes. Rybakina, who was the last player to qualify, hit 7 aces and 1 double fault in the victory. 

Rybakina won 87% of first serve points (27/31) and 50% of second serve points (7/14). She faced just one break point in the match, and she saved it. Rybakina has never scaled the round robin stage at the WTA Finals and has not won more than two matches in a single edition.
