Tomas Martin Etcheverry earned a high-quality win over Jiri Lehecka in the Hamburg Open quarterfinals. The World No. 55 trailed by a break in the first set, but turned the score around to clinch the set 7-5 with two breaks of serve. In the second set, Etcheverry broke Lehecka twice and saved two late break points to seal a 7-5, 6-3 win in just under two hours.

Etcheverry finished the match with two aces and zero double faults. He landed 63% of first serves and won 65% of first serve points (26/40). Etcheverry won 67% of second serve points (16/24) and saved four of six breakpoints. Cobolli served for the first set at 5-4 up, but relinquished his break advantage. Eventually, the set went into a tie-break, and it was Cobolli who won it with three mini breaks.

The second set was dominated by Cobolli as Bautista Agut surprisingly ran out of steam. The Italian broke serve three times to wrap up a 7-6, 6-0 win in 85 minutes. Cobolli has lost one set and that came in the opening round where he came back to beat Vitaliy Sachko 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 and took out Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets in his next outing. Cobolli is an impressive 11-5 on clay this season, having memorably clinched his maiden ATP title in Bucharest last month. This will be his first Hamburg semifinal.

Cobolli now knows a thing or two about succeeding at this level and this surface having captured his first ATP title last month. But Etcheverry still has a higher ceiling on clay. He’s got the heavier forehand and is more disciplined with that shot. If it comes to close moments in the match, expect him to conjure some brilliance.
